Plenty of great reporting here.

I don't like ANYTHING I heard from Duane Brooks, who they brought over from the Saints, to lead the staff.

He comes off as a really defensive old arse man, stuck in his old arse ways. From basically blowing off some of the newer, advanced techniques being used around the league, because, "hands are the best." To throwing Tyreke under the bus. Implying his knee situation is his own fault..."Possibly a player not really doing everything he should do -- maybe, maybe not."

"Maybe, maybe not."

Always encouraging to hear from the head trainer.

Soooooooooo many "maybes" and "not my faults," in there.

If I'm a player I wouldnt want to play for this team just because I feel like this doctor would screw up my career

Anyone with half a brain knows that our training staff sucks, and I don't need to read an article confirming or denying that. What I do like is that maybe this adds pressure to Old Man Benson to make further changes in the organization.

One of the things I like about the idea of Dumars as President is that it may cut or at least buffer the ties to the football side of campus.

One bit of good news from the article:

quote:

Pondexter had offseason surgery to repair the cartilage in his right knee, but he says it "didn't really work the way we wanted it to." After holding out hope of playing into January, the self-professed "stubborn" swingman conceded and had a cartilage-replacement procedure that sidelined him for the entirety of the 2015-16 season.

"I can tell the difference, even walking around as a normal person and being able to go up and down stairs -- the little things," he says. "It feels 10 times better than it did the day before the last surgery."

Its like our guys get cut on for trial and error purposes. They eventually figure it out, just not the first try.

Looks like Loomis/Demps and company didn't like our new Spurs guy implying that we might not spending top dollar.
quote:

"We're getting there," Sumerlin says. "We're definitely moving in the right direction. We're just in the process of getting to where the Spurs are. I think once we start winning some playoff games, start getting a bigger budget, we can start going that route."

This was added to the article later:

quote:

Sumerlin, after reading his quote two weeks later, says that he regrets the comment, and Demps provided the following written statement in response:

"Mr. and Mrs. Benson have spared no expense, and have gone above and beyond in providing all the resources for the Pelicans to be successful. Our practice facility is one of the top five facilities in the league, if not the best.

"As I have repeatedly explained, our first year strength coach was promoted to his position after all of our equipment for this season was purchased and ordered.

"After each season, we evaluate our facilities and equipment, research what is the optimal equipment for our players and then we attain it. There is no budget."

Success requires fitting resources, and in the Pelicans' case, the whole operation works in conjunction with the NFL's Saints', as that team's facility shares the Pelicans' campus space in suburban Metairie, Louisiana.

The facility is world class. That being said, Benson is a known cheapskate.

I don't know what spending is like behind the scenes, but he's far from cheap in the areas visible to the public.

From the cap situations for both teams(Saints have been at the top of the league for a while now), spending on coaches, facilities, needlessly moving training camps, trading picks on rookie deals for big contracts.

Benson's problem over the past few decades hasn't been a lack of spending. Its been handing over power to guys like Mike Ditka, Loomis(lately), Demps, etc. to make those spending decisions, almost unchecked.

Except the Saints routinely have one of the highest payrolls in the league

Spending lavishly in one area does not preclude one from being a cheapskate in other areas.

IIRC when we discussed QPon's injury there were 2 options, repairing the damage which has a decent success rate and most importantly shorter recovery time, or replacing the damage, the second surgery he had, which has a better success rate but longer recovery time. It's pretty common for teams and athletes to choose the easier/quicker option first. I don't really fault them for that if that's what happened.

I think it might be more accurate to say he wants the team to be profitable than he's a cheapskate. Sterling and Shinn are on one end of the spectrum, Prokhorov and Cuban are on the other, Benson is probably somewhere in the middle. He won't willingly lose money long term, neither would most owners, but all indications are he would pay the tax for a contender.

I wonder how last year shook out, but I would be shocked if Benson hasn't taken a substantial bath on the team based on every other year he's owned them. This makes sense and, based on Demps's statement, is likely true.

Most people talk about Benson being old and wanting a winner. I think there is some truth to that, but it is also about making money. The team may have increased in value tremendously, but I wouldnt be surprised if, in their current state, they are losing tens of millions annually.

You do realize that cartilage repair surgery and cartilage replacement surgery are not the same don't you, or are you one of those guys that has 0 zero about the human body, but is trying to act like an internet hardass? Cartilage replacement surgery is kinda of a big deal, and requires a ton of rehab, and down time, but don't let little things like facts get in the way of you talking out your arse.
