I understand that skepticism and it's logical, but I think there is one big difference this year. We have a clear cut #2 now. We are no longer hoping Jrue/Tyreke/Gordon would take a leap and become a significantly better player. Cousins is as talented as we need him to be, hopefully he'll be as good as we need him to be. Cousins giving his best in a contract year in a situation he seems to like and has bought into is a much safer bet than Holiday going from a top 60-100 player to a top 25 player.

but that's the catch- Cousins is probably the biggest "if" of them all.

no one denies his talent. and i agree that he seems locked in like rarely before in SAC. still very fair to question if he can hold it together.

Betting on Cousins may not be a slam dunk but this year there's reason to hope, in years past we were just lying to ourselves thinking Jrue/Tyreke would go from good player on a bad team to great player on a good team.

Disagree - Rondo is the biggest 'If' of them all IMO

He holds the entire fate of the franchise in his hands. And that's not hyperbole.

AD is gone ab good, Cousins as well - this season can be great if Rondo is great or a disaster if he is a disaster. He plays like he did in the last two games all season and they are fighting for a top 4 seed. Plays like he did for Bulls in the regular season (for the most part), and it will be tough to make the playoffs unless Jrue is a fringe All Star

Agreed. I'm a big time Rondo hater and I am extremely skeptical we will get "good Rondo" for any length of time.

I have almost no faith in Rondo giving the Pels 40 good games, forget 60. So he's a non factor for me.

I just think their only option is Davis + Cousins playing out of their minds all year and carrying this team.

Matt Moore who covers the NBA for CBS has been doing a lot of film study on the Pels the past few days. Hopefully he's got an in depth article coming out but his tweets have been interesting:

quote:

Hardwood Paroxysm? @HPbasketball Sep 12

It’s crazy how common the Pelicans used this, with Cousins as the pick and roll ball handler with Davis.

Clip of DC/AD P&R to alleyoop

Warriors defending non-post-up shots around the rim vs. all teams: 1.13, 6th best.

Warriors defending those shots vs. the Pelicans: 1.33

That would be worst in the league by a fair margin if it was their year-long mark, btw.

I’m very aware of Rondo’s limitations. But he’s going to find Davis on so many freaking cuts this year.

I feel confident Draymond would adjust in another 7 game series like he did in ’15, but man, Davis gave him the business last year

Something funny: saw in @ZachLowe_NBA’s piece on Love about how no one hedges. Noticed Warriors (switch kings) did it way more than most.

Watching stuff vs. the Pelicans, they blitzed Jrue Holiday pretty consistently, because typically they could do it and not get burned.

Narrator: They could NOT do that vs. Anthony Davis

There are all these ways the Pelicans’ construction could fail, but there are some sneaky smart things they did (after doing some digging)

Solomon Hill was awful, in general, but one thing he did really well was cut. He got a LOT of points after Boogie joined up

Defenses HAD to double Cousins. Even the Warriors couldn’t play him straight up. Same with AD. So cutters are really important.

Yes, the spacing is concerning. But the guys they added and have left over are all really good, smart cutters

Jrue Holiday is both a cutter and floor spacer, and he can find the cut pass. Rondo is a SUPERB passer to cutters.

Something that gets lost, Tony Allen last year shot 47% from the field. For all the criticisms, he can still finish. That’s HUGE.

Rondo’s spot-up numbers were decent. The response is that “well, no one guards him so spacing is still bad.” But he’s also great at finding

The Pels’ spacing isn’t going to be great, but it could be decent. And there’s a great chance we’re looking at a top-10 defense.

The Pels were 9th last year in defensive rating, and improved in multiple positions defensively

Yes, the spacing is concerning. But the guys they added and have left over are all really good, smart cutters

Yes he is [Ian Clark]. I still can’t believe how cheap he was on the market. I had him as a top-20 value.

Of the 111 minutes Anthony Davis was on the floor vs. the Warriors last season, Draymond was on court for 104 of them.

Very few dudes gave Draymond the business like AD.

It’s true, they went 3-0. But I’m actively watching (and tweeting) clips of Davis torching him

Damn, that's great shite.

Yeah I've definitely noticed that they've gone all in on adding cutters. That's the model they are going for, for sure, with Boogie and AD.

Should also be noted that one of Chris Finch's strengths with creating that high powered, league leading Nuggets offense(after he took over running it) was his use of cutters and cutting.

Using Cousins as a perimeter weapon because of his ability to pass over defenders. Check the gravity of AD which allows the cut.

i've seen most of those tweets from Moore and am hopeful it means a big piece from him on the Pels soon.

i agree with this last one most of all. doesnt mean Cousins isn't going to bully down low, but he has to be stretched out due to his ball skills. if he can make the right play and they get guys moving off ball, it will be fun to watch.

one thing i wish NBA stats would do- sort play type by date/season segment. would be curious to see if cuts % and PPP changed post trade or not.

Cousins is occupying 2 defenders, AD is occupying 2 defenders, and the 5th defender is James Harden. If the other 3 guys can't step up 3 vs. Harden we don't deserve to keep AD/DC.

heres the article from matt moore

LINK

quote:

The New Orleans Pelicans are basically a speeding vehicle headed for a cliff, trying to jump to the other side. One way or another, they're going airborne. The question is whether they clear the gap this season.

This quote is out of context, but it was still nice reading these words strung together in that order.

With Davis able to score in every way imaginable, the hidden versatility in what Cousins can do next to him, and the additions they made in the offseason, New Orleans can make a big jump this year. Skepticism is reasonable and warranted, but do not sleep on the potential of what the Pelicans can do this season if things actually fall in place for them. The talent is there. The formula is there.

Now they just have to make it work, with a team that's been short on luck and is long on difficult personalities.

exactly. there are very 5s in the league that can guard Cousins on the perimeter AND bang with him. most teams will go big and those guys will need help.

just need to keep things moving on and off the ball. stagnation will kill this team because of the offensive talent on hand

It is better then hear another RealGM podcast with Leroux, Mahoney (SI), Tjarks (Ringer) about SW Division.
Calling NO -Hornets. Having them outside PO. On the level of Grizzlies (even below). Little better than Mavs. Expecting losing DMC to Mavs in free agency.

Why I am hurting myself by hearing/reading this s...t?

the point that most are making is that at best it is a dice roll as to how this plays out
and based on the pels track record and constant black cloud of injury, most feel that the correct play is that it will fall apart

it's an outcome that many will be able to say they saw coming

I saw a game in which AD looked like first team all time nba vs green.

I find it weird that the team cant find a high school coach guru to teach allen to shoot.

Remake his shot.
