Everything You Need to Know About Dario Saric

LINK
I've been a critic of some of the guys from 247/BSS, but this is a very well written article. It's made me warm up a lot to the idea of Saric- who, like McNamara pointed out, Dell loves.

(And no, I am not McNamara either)

re: Everything You Need to Know About Dario Saric
What i am confused about is that this is a make or break year for monty and dell and they want to draft a guy who is more than likely not going to play this season. If we have another bad year, these two ( or at least monty) will be gone.

Just coming to post this.

I will also drop At the Hive's look at Trey Burke in here. If that's a problem, I will edit and post it somewhere else.

Rohan is quite high on him.

If Trey Burke's available at #6 and Dell Demps passes, for the second consecutive season he'll have made an Austin Rivers sized mistake.

re: Everything You Need to Know About Dario Saric
Is it a rumor or what they he is going to stay in Europe for the first year?

Why draft that guy?

Do we want to wait?

Is it worth it to wait?

Who are they going to get at 6 that would have an impact? The only position where players are so bad that a Damian Lillard type rookie could have an impact on the team is Small Forward, but there is no Damian Lillard type of player at SF in the draft. They couldn't even get an instant impact player with the #1 pick unless they were ready to trade Gordon and open up a hole at SG.

Monty's tirades about his frustration with young guys at the end of the year said pretty clearly what the plan for next season was. They will use their cap space in FA and Trades to add veteran players that are ready to contribute. That's how they'll go from 27 wins to 38-45 wins.

I just read the article and it is a pretty good article with some fair points.

The remarks and statistics about his FT shooting is very encouraging. It explains the run of 50% he had and how that wasn't very accurate in reflecting his FT shooting.

That's probably my last obstacle from fully being on board with this pick. McNamara compares the Ginobli situation to stashing Saric, but we don't have the same luxury that they had at that time of being able to stash a player, we need help now. Other difference is, they were stashing a 2nd round player, we would be stashing a lottery pick.

While I don't think Saric will provide a huge impact (scoring mostly), parts of his game should be able to provide him with an opportunity to play right away, and make somewhat of an impact (passing, rebounding).

I agree with you, as usual. There aren't many players that will make an immediate impact that would benefit Monty and Dell anyway this year. As McNamara points out, there were only two rookies last year that had a PER over 15 and played significant minutes. Only 4 if you reduce the minutes down.

Stashing Saric (I think he comes over, personally and doesn't spend a year in Europe) may actually help them: It gives them an extra 2.6 million to play with in FA.

I definitely think they go after multiple veterans to help out this year. They've got to get more consistent play, and they have got to get into the mid to upper 30s in wins to save their jobs.

Rubio and Valanciunas are better comparisons...but I don't think Saric has anywhere near the buyout that those guys had.

In fact: Val's was 2.4 million and Rubio's was 8 million (reduced all of the way down to 1.4 after staying in Europe for 2 years and much kvetching). And both of those guys were picked a spot higher.

Of course, Minnesota and Toronto sucked and still do.

I'm sold.

And I don't think this is a make or break year. Fans like Monty and understand this is a process.. Well at least the educated fans

Just ask yourself who else could they draft that would get significant minutes this year? Monty and Dell are ready to win, not tank for Wiggins, so they aren't going to trade a veteran just to open up minutes for a rookie.

CJ McCollum and Burke are probably ready to make an impact, but how many minutes would they get with Vasquez as the established starter and Rivers being Monty's pet project?

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is who I think is the best mix of talent meeting need, but if Gordon's healthy and they bring Roberts back even he would struggle to get much more than 10-15 minutes a game.

Len would not get any time with the bigs currently on our roster unless there was an injury.

Porter plays a position of need but he's so lightweight he could be a few years away from being useful. Plus rookies are almost always bad on defense, and his offense isn't good enough to over come that so he'd probably be 3rd string behind Aminu/FA and Miller most of the year.

What if we draft Shabazz, I still think that this dude will be a pure score in the NBA. People are down on him, but I'm not. He has that never quit mentality and a good work ethic, much like Austin Rivers.

Very true as well. Shabazz is one player who could, but he's going to be a player that a team either loves or hates (like Jarvis Jones for the NFL draft), and I can see a lot of teams not even having him on their board at all.

I guess it isn't as much as getting significant minutes as it as getting any minutes with the team, and seeing the rookie progress. It wouldn't be the end of world if we drafted him and he stayed over there a year, because let's fact it, we aren't a championship contender this year.

Actually $3.2m since every team gives rookies 120% of the slotted amount, but I agree. That extra money may be the difference in landing the FA we want and settling for a plan C, or landing the FA we want and having the money to take on a guy like Deng for one season. Or that $3.2m could be used to sweeten the pot for a player like Korver or Webster to sign a one year deal with us, Landry/Kaman style.

But the article definitely helped sell me. The best point made was that he really seems like someone the Spurs would pick. I'd still rather Oladipo if he falls, even if we keep Gordon.

Is that a good thing? This year's FA crop is terrible. I would hate for a rebuilding team like ours to waste our space on long term deals for marginal players that are not going to aid in the long term progress of the team. If Monty/Dell gets impatient and wastes money on marginal players, it will doom the rebuild. Hopefully they will look at shorter or bargain contracts.

I am all on board with picking him and stashing. There is no one in this draft that stands out. No one that I really think will make an immediate difference. So you take a guy that looks to have a very high ceiling, that you can stash in Europe and not have him count on the books. It is the perfect scenario for this draft.

This is a pretty big year. This teams needs to show vast improvement and some promise for the future. I'm not saying they need to go to the finals, but they need to prove something good is brewing.

Monty may not even be the coach by the time Saric plays. It's stupid to say 100% he's our pick when we literally have no idea who will go 5 spots prior to our pick. Have we even held individual workouts yet?

Agreed. There has to be a time where you show some serious improvement and commitment to win for a variety of reasons. You want to establish yourself as a contender for FA, put butts in the seats, etc. If they draft Saric, I'll be disappointed.

Trey Burke on Friday June 14th is the only one I've seen announced. I guess technically Demps visiting Croatia was Saric's individual workout.
