Smoothie King Center turns 25 in October. How much work does it need? An assessment on the building begins later this month.

On Thursday, Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District (LSED) officials approved a plan for Gensler — the architecture and design firm that assisted with the $500 million renovation of the Caesars Superdome — to take a thorough look at Smoothie King Center’s infrastructure.

The facility needs assessment of Smoothie King Center is slated to begin in mid-March. That process will take approximately six weeks.

Silver added, “Every NBA team, regardless of location and market size, needs a model, state-of-the-art arena to compete in the league.”

Smallest lower bowl in the league, woefully below modern standards.

I think the team will push EXTREMELY hard for a brand new Arena, while the State will commit to a large, 200ish mill renovation, if it can be done.

pels having a temporary place to play is a huge dilemma for a rebuild imo.

Its a problem. If they build it in a different spot (as the team wants), its not a problem.

If they stay in the same footprint...

The only viable path would be to wait until Baton Rouge builds their new Arena, and play there a year.

Rebuild somewhere safe Where families don’t have to worry about getting robbed, car vandalized or killed. That would be a nice start

NY State Court values that building and land at $1.3 million.

Something closely mimicking the barclay center would be my suggestion.

Alario Center could easily serve this purpose. Rename the team the Bridge City Buckets. Rebuild the ferry terminal in the fly. Mo’s Pizza handles all concessions.

That lakers game will be an all timer.

It’s not that bad round there is it?!
Every time I’ve been I’ve never felt unsafe and just happily walked back to canal street after games via Girod and Poydras…

Or was I just blissfully ignorant!?

It needs to be torn down. It was built poorly for a basketball arena.

i was just at the bridgestone arena in nashville where the predators play. it opened in 1996 (so, older than the blender); only minor renovations since (nothing major to concourses/etc). it seats 19,000 for basketball. SKC seats 17,000.

its an interesting comparison. the nashville arena is clearly of the same vintage, and it cost 144MM to build. SKC is only slightly smaller, and cost 114MM. bridgestone has a much larger lower bowl, and the concourses while dated are really nice. a lot of that is due to actual quality concessions instead of generic institutional crap like we have. it occurred to me that the nashville arena "felt" nicer, even though its basically the same age as SKC, because the little things are nicer, not the big things.

SKC is not in any way a "dump" as many like to say. and even if it was, its fine and it could have character with a little work and a little vision

Agree with this. There just isn’t a scenario where the arena should be built elsewhere.

We need to be in reasonable proximity to downtown, the convention center and the casino because we are a visiting fan destination.

For pelican games I think the onsite parking situation is decent and could be expanded with a new garage on the surface lot.

Plus I think Benson partially owns the Hyatt, owns benson tower, etc. The pelicans are an anchor tenant for that entire are including champions square. There is no way Gayle wants to move all the events the arena hosts away from her high rise properties.

Would be a real full circle moment for this franchise.

Agreed. Imagine what $200M could do for the arena. Compared to probably $1B for a new arena is a less desirable spot.
