I see some are not accounting for natural population increases over the next 20 years. 25 thousand seating will be the norm.

There is a reason that certain musical acts do not come to New Orleans. SKC too small and Superdome too big.
A new arena is critical to ensuring this team remains in N.O. indefinitely. Don't think so? Ask Seattle.

You're just making stuff up here, there are zero NBA arenas that seat over 21,000. And there are zero musical acts that skip SKC due to it not being large enough. Zero.

Do other NBA arenas have that much more capacity?

The Smoothie King Center is the 2nd smallest in the NBA.

Smoothie King Center: 16,867 (#28)

There are 13 NBA arenas over 19,000 capacity. Most are between 18-20k

The way people are defending the SKC is mindblowing.

Maybe they haven't been to newer arenas. But the Arena is universally considered possibly the worst in the NBA, and Silver has basically flat out said its not up to snuff and won't be getting another ASG.

The squadron play in a better arena. The pelicans players have stated that themselves. Imagine NBA players thinking their Gleague squad has a better arena. It’s embarrassing.

we have bigger fish to fry than a new arena when the existing arena is adequate and perfectly located. Take the same arena and put it in a bad location and I’d be all in on replacing it.

can the blender host NBA games is all that matters, and the answer is yes (obviously). Can it be upgraded? (yes). will it be upgraded? (yes). Will it ever get another all star game if not replaced? (who cares). NBA all star is marketing trade show now anyway and might be completely re-thought in coming years, maybe even without an actual game LOL

spending billion(s) on a new arena in a worse location is nonsense, as long as the bensons own the team

If you are dead last out of all stadiums it isn’t “adequate”

What is the measurement for "dead last"? How are thry comparing the arena to ither venues? No arguing, just curious how they come up with that

Concessions, amenities, fan friendly, exits/entrances, fan seating, fan viewing, etc.

Im a pels fan and been to several other NBA arenas- the SKC is pretty bad.

All of those people and metrics that "rate" stadiums rate it last.

Lowest amount of lower bowl seats in league (many stadiums are basically just lower bowl now). Worst amenities. Worst suites. Worst food.

Behind the scenes stuff that allows for large events and multi use is apparently abysmal.

I yearn for the day my people in New Orleans desire something more than adequate on a day to day basis.

First off, where did he say that we would not be getting another ASG? Secondly, the odds of getting one in the near future are slim to none since we had 2 within such a short period.

I agree the SKC is outdated. To me the biggest issue is the smaller lower bowl. That is a revenue issue for the owner. I have had season tickets since the Hornets moved here in 2002. While I would certainly like a shiny new arena, I do not have a problem with what I go to the game to do - see the team play. I love my seats and have a great view. Food choices could certainly be better, but they do not need a new arena to fix that.

Like the previous poster I agree SKC is outdated and stale, and the biggest issue by far that should drive the need for a new arena is lack of lower bowl seats. That problem is almost impossible to fix with a renovation.

That said I've been to at least 8 other NBA arenas in the past 6-7 years for games or other events. SKC is outdated, but its not that bad comparatively than those other arenas. And everything but the lower bowl seats could be addressed in a renovation. So I agree with you, just less dramatically.

SKC is a dump compared to other arenas. Zero shot the build a new arena so they’ll need to pump some serious serious money in the current arena.

Many years ago there was a plan to build a new football stadium basically between canal and basin.

Maybe revisit that footprint?

A new arena isn’t fixing the concessions issues

The only viable path would be to wait until Baton Rouge builds their new Arena, and play there a year.

I mean there's a dome which is super like 500 feet away and wouldn't disrupt their fans routines

My hope is always that Benson would buy City Hall/Duncan Plaza and they could build a multi-purpose arena there. It would have a grand entrance on Loyola and all those flat parking areas could be developed into vertical parking/commercial entertainment.

Its no secret that Tulane is looking to exit that area and charity has a new development. All the doctors have moved to new facilities across Claiborne. Investment in that region could have a positive return on vitalizing the old medical district which is currently pretty blighted.

City Hall needs a new home in order for that to happen. There is no reason for city offices to be downtown. Finish the medical relocation. Move government and courts to a more accessible location outside the cbd and claim downtown as an exclusive residential/commercial/entertainment district. Then move the bus hub off Loyola to the other side of I-10.

Then tear down the arena and build a roll out natural grass field (like Arizona has) for the Dome.

That’s like a minimum 30 year plan in New Orleans.
