I agree, I like the premise
What do you think about the twolves as a trade partner if they try and make a run? Maybe get a shabazz or dieng.,. If we took on a Pekovic, could we do anything w that contract? Or I know there have been Rubio deal whispers, could you see something there? Good fit w gentry. There team have a bunch of pieces but I'm not sure they all work or if they even want to compete

That blows up any potential 2017 cap space, and he might be harder to move than Asik. At least Asik can play if you have a role for him. Pekovic's number of games played is pretty depressing:
65
47
62
54
31

I don't want to play him. Didn't know if there was another option like stretching him

He's got roughly 3/$36 remaining so stretching would be $5 million in dead money for 7 years. Nobody's going to want that on their books.

Yeah Pek is a no go. We cannot possibly take that on.

Figured as much, wasn't sure if I missed something
What about sending Gordon expiring there, then taking on 3 years of Rubio. Get shabazz too. Clean holiday and evans and Asik and Anderson, too

I am okay keep g Holiday around. His deal is pretty friendly. I don't think Tyreke is a winner, so I would flip him for assets.

quote:Largely agree with your thought process. I guess I only diverge in two places. I don't believe bringing in Morris and "blowing it up" are mutually exclusive. You'd still have Gordon's expiring to move. It likely doesn't change anything regarding an Asik trade, and you still go into next season with Tyreke and Jrue as expirings. So you start over with Davis on his max deal and Morris on a "cheap" deal.
To boil my ideology to its simplest form:
The only way we are going to get another stud next to AD anytime soon is via the 2016 draft. It is highly unlikely that we will ever have the potential of being THIS bad again. We aren't landing any stud FA's and we don't have the assets to land a stud in a trade, so if you want the highest ceiling for this team in the future, you have to capitalize on your one chance to get a really good player in 2016
So.... blow it up and get some assets for guys who aren't long term pieces while in the process making your team bad enough to finish with a bottom 5-8 record. Hope the ping pong balls go your way on lottery night or have a great player fall into your lap wherever you pick.
It's not a lock. No path is. But that path has the highest ceiling IMO
The other issue with blowing it up is, i'm sure Davis didn't re sign with a year 5 rebuild in mind. He hasn't tried to play player-gm to this point, which is great, but I have to believe he wouldn't be happy starting from scratch.

Don't trust Jrue to ever be healthy. Also, he lacks a killer instinct come closing time, and there are tons of PGs out there, and more coming up through the ranks.
The Pelicans are much better with him. And, so far, he's staying healthy.

"buyers/sellers" dynamic may be more nuanced this year than usual.
Especially with the cap spike. Guys on "old cap" deals for a couple more years are very attractive to teams. Plus there are a lot more teams in the .500 range this year. Some teams that haven't been to the playoffs in a while might decide to go all out to do that as we get closer to the deadline.

Yup. Markieff Morris is a good player on a great deal (felony charges pending). He isn't turning this team around singlehandedly. Still would only have 2 quality bigs and backcourt fit issues.

There's a window to do a very quick rebuild. It's not likely, but Davis is a trump card.
Purely Hypothetical:
Say you pair Davis with (un-incarcerated and motivated) Morris, then surround them with reasonable return from Gordon's expiring and one of Holiday/Evans. That is not a bad start. It comes down to what happens with the lottery pick. Not many lottery picks would have better landing spots than a Davis/Morris frontline. If that guy has the goods, in 2-3 years they could be knocking on WCF.
Of course, it could all come crashing down. Like McNamara said, there is no "one true way." Almost every rebuilding method fails constantly. Right now they have to figure out what's best for Davis and the franchise over the next 5 years, not the next 5 months.

What made Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, and Jimmy Butler special? All came into the league with relatively modest expectations, filled a specific niche for their teams and seemed to blossom into 1b players in just 2-3 years. Were those 3 always destined to be stars, or can you make a star with the right mix of opportunity and fit?
Posted on 12/14/15 at 3:22 pm to TigerinATL
If any of them were destined to be stars, I'd say it's PG. the other 2 could very well be the product of their environment.
