Expand the fan base of the brand like come see the NEXT nba stars. Especially if there isn't anything else going on.

Pensacola Pelicans works for me.

What facility could be used in St. Tammany Parish? North Shore harbor center?

1) They've been trying to use that branding since day 1 but it doesn't work because...

2) How many legitimate stars have come out of the d-league?

I think Hassan Whiteside was demoted to the d-league at some point, but was still on a contract with an NBA team.

There haven't been many stars yet but it also hasn't been around long. And many teams have 1-2 guys that are fringe nba-dleague. Hopefully that margin gets even tighter.

Mobile makes the most sense to me.

I am not holding my breath in Mobile, but we could desperately use the team. If for nothing else to book some dates into the Downtown Civic Center which rarely gets used except during Mardi Gras and the occasional event like a rap concert, monster truck or WWE.

I am pretty sure that the easy choice would be to go to Baton Rouge, but a side benefit to coming East is an expansion of your fan base.

I am a Saints season tickets holder and we drive over from Mobile on Game days. The first year or two I marveled at the amount of cars that we would pass or would pass us with Mobile County (AL), Baldwin (AL), Santa Rosa(FL), Escambia(FL) and Walton (FL) to come over to games. Those last three are the first three counties of the Florida Panhandle.

So a move to Mobile or Pensacola even might in turn bring more fans to New Orleans to see familiar faces and names or just to enjoy the game.

BR. The River Center badly needs an anchor tenant.

The Baton Rouge Beaks

We can finally have the awesome should-have-been logo of a Pelican with the basketball in his beak/pouch and the top of the ball sticking out visibly.

Greatest crime in logo history not to have the damn cartoon pelican toting a ball in his mouth pouch

Jeff Duncan has a bit more information on the 5 remaining host cities except oddly enough Baton Rouge.

TL;DR version is Shreveport plans to build a new arena, Pensacola and Mobile have hosted minor league teams in the past and plan to use the same facilities for the Pels. Jackson would need to upgrade it's arena and that has been complicated by the mayor's race. Again, no mention of Baton Rouge and this seems like a pro Shreveport puff piece.

quote:

Team officials have started to schedule dates next week to hear presentations from the five finalists

...Shreveport will make its presentation on June 8. The other candidates are in the process of finalizing dates with team officials.

Shreveport officials announced last week a plan to build a $25 million multi-purpose sports complex along the downtown riverfront that would include an arena that would serve as home to the D-League franchise. Last week, the Caddo-Bossier Port Commission voted 5-4 in support of Shreveport Mayor Ollie Tyler's proposal to bring the Pelicans to Shreveport.

There's more at the LINK

I'm not anti-Shreveport for the GLeague team, but the omission of any details on BR in a seemingly slanted article that gives the most detail on a property development that is worth $10s of millions to someone just makes the article seem a little suspicious.

Southern Mississippi makes the most sense to me. Makes the state of Mississippi a part of the Pelicans family and grow the fanbase a little.

I like pensacola. Great minor league baseball fan base so I think they would support the Pels easily.

There are a lot worse places to play than sunny Florida. I bet the players would like it.
