Considering this song was written about a guy I knew, and his wife and child which over time I grew to know more... I was bit pissed that the announcer credited Zac Brown's band with the song... And I love Zac Brown for the most part... I think it was an announcer's mistake by not giving credit to Jason Isbell for writing it... and I would have liked to see them mention it was for a fallen marine named Matthew Conley, and his wife, daughter, and family...

As my friend who posted the video on youtube stated.. I hope that song gains the publicity it deserves, but that no one forgets who it is about as easily as they forgot who wrote it...

upvote... it's my favorite isbell song.

the lyrics aren't meant for corporate america though

quote:

"Dress Blues"

What can you see from your window?
I can't see anything from mine.
Flags on the side of the highway
and scripture on grocery store signs.
Maybe eighteen was too early.
Maybe thirty or forty is too.
Did you get your chance to make peace with the man
before he sent down his angels for you?

Mamas and grandmamas love you
'cause that's all they know how to do.
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
or sleeping in your dress blues.

Your wife said this all would be funny
when you came back home in a week.
You'd turn twenty-two and we'd celebrate you
in a bar or a tent by the creek.
Your baby would just about be here.
Your very last tour would be up
but you won't be back. They're all dressing in black
drinking sweet tea in styrofoam cups.

Mamas and grandmamas love you.
American boys hate to lose.
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
or sleeping in your dress blues.

Now the high school gymnasium's ready,
full of flowers and old legionnaires.
Nobody showed up to protest,
just sniffle and stare.
But there's red, white, and blue in the rafters
and there's silent old men from the corps.
What did they say when they shipped you away
to fight somebody's Hollywood war?

Nobody here could forget you.
You showed us what we had to lose.
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
or sleeping in your dress blues.

No, no you never planned on the bombs in the sand
or sleeping in your dress blues.

I get the sentimental value this song has to you and not trying to down play it, but I don't think many stations/announcers would take the time to credit a songwriter that 99.9% of the public has never heard of... just the way it goes..

edit: And I have an Isbell "block" but it's a damn good song... I can't let my bias get in the way..

don't know why... I bought that first record with the 400 unit (is that what it was called) and I didn't really care for it... and I don't think i really cared for him in interviews... then there is the whole Alabama thing... it's irrational and silly, I know..

I think I preferred him as the fat side man to PH and Cooley...

I don't think Zac Brown is on the same level as Isbell, but he and his band do get a lot of hate they shouldn't. Plenty of talent in there. They've made some shitty songs, but also have some pretty good ones and do solid covers.

Agreed, especially when you consider the crap artist out there like Brantley Gilbert and Jason Aldean.

If you only know isbell's songs off southeastern you are missing out on a LOT of great music.

while it may not be pleasing to the Isbell and DBT fans on here...(which I am one)...this happens all the time...the original artist may not have the polish that the mainstream guy does...so the mainstream guy gets it and brings it to the masses...that song is great...and should get to more ears...if that is by way of ZBB, then so be it..you better know Isbell realizes this...

how about another ZBB song that was great..."Colder Weather"...you think Levi Lowrey gets the credit for that song he deserves?

or "Never Leave Harlan Alive"...Brad Paisley covered it and brought it to the mainstream...they even use it on that show "Justified"...hardly anybody knows it was written by Darrell Scott and that his version is ten times better...

it is what it is...kudos for ZBB getting it out there and for Isbell in realizing that is what it would take...and of course that he would make $$$

True. But Patty Loveless' version is 10 times better than Darrell's
