It's not all nerds I know, but let's be honest: a lot of these guys are tipping fedoras part time.

Try listening to power metal. Its basically the musical version of LOTR. There's lots of songs about dragons and castles and fantasy stuff. Metal in general is music for outcasts so there's that too.

Right. I was a metal fan when I was 14-15.

So did I, still do. I'm probably the anti nerd.

I just shifted to punk after that. I was still angry, but it felt more raw and focused. Now I'm hardly ever anger.

Metal is also very technical. In a lot of cases, technical ability is favored. I think this attracts a lot of math/engineer type people who think in this way.

That's actually a very good point.

My cousin is a damn musical prodigy. Has perfect pitch, can hear something once and play it back perfectly. The only music he listens to is Jazz or old hymns. It's weird. I wonder if he ever felt a draw to metal.

A lot of death metal guitarists actually learn jazz riffs to help them write death metal riffs.

It gives them an outlet to express repressed aggression?

I loved metal from age 13-20. Then I graduated to blues and classic rock

i dunno....most people i know who are beyond casual fans of music, be it metal or anything else, have at least some nerdish qualities to them. sure, i'll include myself in there, too...

i guess the metal nerds stand out more because there aren't as many casual metal fans these days to offset 'em...

I'm an older geek, but I would somewhat disagree. We were more into Rush and Emerson, Lake, Palmer back in the day because of the "technical" nature. I like some metal every now and then but consider it more of a simple indulgence, not technical at all.

The number of nerd fans depends on the band. I never saw too many nerds at Pantera or Slayer shows. There were a few at some of the shows I saw in Dallas and N.O. last year, but it was never more than a scattering.

Same here. Been going to metal concerts for over 30 years; see nothing but freaks coming out of the woodwork.

This is what keeps me hanging on as a metal fan. It started as teenage aggression though.
