Of course it's Gabriel: he was their creative, theatrical force for their acclaimed live shows, their lead vocalist during the pinnacle of the progressive rock boom, his presence during that period really defined the image of Genesis to millions upon millions of people which broadened their appeal, his singing voice significantly influenced Collins', and he proved to be a tremendously successful solo artist with a distinctive style which influenced the next generation. Let me describe it this way: the world doesn't know who Genesis was/is without Peter Gabriel. He really established them as a viable group to thrive into subsequent decades.

No Hackett?

Gabriel is the obvious answer here. Quality of music declined after he left and got even worse after Hackett quit.

Probably Petey Gabs

Although Lamb Lies Down is a bloated mess of an album and that's on Pete since it's basically a Peter Gabriel album with Genesis as the back up band on that one

The rare sections where he shuts the frick up and lets the band play are the best parts of the album. And are rare because Peter Gabriel never shuts the frick up on that album.

I can see why he left after that one. Genesis did fine after (for a few albums), so maybe Pete wasn't that great after all.

Not an easy answer if you love some of the post-Gabriel stuff.

Maybe an easier question would be who would it hurt most to lose besides Collins after the Gabriel/Hackett lineup.

To that I'd say Banks by a mile. The sheer bandwith he covered was vital in continuing their sound.

No contest: Peter Gabriel.

Lamb is great because of him, not despite him. I will admit that the entire story/concept is stupid, but the vocal melodies and lyrics on the individual songs are great. And he pretty much wrote Carpet Crawler by himself. Obviously the rest of the band played a large role in the album as well, but I certainly don't think they were fine after he left.

Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, Duke, and Abacab are all solid albums

I mean they didn't have anything the caliber of Foxtrot or Selling England after Pete left but they didn't just immediately turn to horrid cheesy pop

That took a few albums, lol

The end of real Genesis was "And Then There Was Three". The departure of Hackett turned Genesis into the Phil Collins Group.

he is severely underrated. I think the 'We Can't Dance' album has his prints all over it.

Duke in particular, was a well done post- Gabriel album. Tremendous songwriting , especially considering some of the schlock that came later.

Gabriel was the weird genius that made Genesis - Genesis to me though. A lot of that era was self-indulgent, it seems only old- timers really get it.
