Two that always come to mind for me are Colm Wilkinsom and Smokey Robinson. Although I don't really care for her music, Whitney Houston was special, too. Throwing in Andrea Bocelli too, not that he is an afterthought of course.

I immediately thought of Shannon Hoon. I always loved that raspy/almost falsetto sound. Of course there are many others but that's off the top of my head.

Sam Cooke was clearly the best. He wrote all of his songs and no one could interpret them better than he could.

In person, Chris Robinson. Dude was effortless when I saw him.

Female version of same style was a young Bonnie Raitt. Never appreciated her until seeing some 70's footage of her.

Fav has to be Karen Carpenter.

Best I've heard was Kelly Willis.
