Do you spend more time trying to learn popular/cool songs,or trying to write something new?
Informal survey.

My answer is C.

Play something poorly that is WAY beyond by capability.

Is it something that comes from your head,or something by somebody else?
You should always try to play over your head IMHO,and the next thing you know..it's not over your head anymore.

I spend 75% of my time playing things I already know to make myself feel good and 25% playing stuff so hard I'll never be able to play correctly and feeling shitty about myself.

The 25% is mostly stuff from other people.

I like learning other people's stuff that I find interesting/challenging. I love mastering complex rhythms with a metronome. I spend a fair bit of time practicing improvising as well. I find this type of stuff relaxing/meditative.

I don't really write stuff that much anymore. I get obsessed, and it takes a ton of my time and energy so unfortunately not a priority in my life right now.

At my stage in the game I can only play what i hear. I randomly strum chords and realize what song I am doing sometimes. It just comes by accident.

I haven't been played very long and I must say it's quite frustrating some times, but I'm hooked for life. I've been spending alot of time lately trying to learn some Gilmour/Floyd stuff, but my ultimate goal is to learn to write my own stuff someday.

I play songs somebody else wrote. I don't think any of them are popular though. At least I hope not.

I've been playing for 30 years, and I've only co-written a few completed songs...so you tell me.

I spend a lot of time improvising over different chord changes. I use a ditto pedal that is really useful for loops.

About equal time at both. I like to play others' songs, and create tunes of my own. I play my older tunes a lot, too. I'm not sure how many I've written. Never counted. Estimate 25?

Been creating some new tunes lately.

Been playing guitar 44 years. Alvarez classical is my go-to. I usually play without a pick; I like finger-picking.

I'll occasionally try to learn an interesting riff that will make me work on a different technique, but I prefer playing something new.

If theres a new song that I really dig I'll learn it. Other than that its pretty much jazz or blues.

True story, just play stuff over your capabilities for a while. Then go play some other stuff. When you come back to the difficult material, you've either gotten good enough or much closer. It's odd because you don't feel like you're actively gaining on the material for the most part. But take some time from it, and when you come back, you've made some gains.

I've noticed this too. It's like the muscle memory develops while you're asleep or something. I'll really struggle with something one day but then a day or two later, I try it again and I've made some progress.

I've been playing about the same time as you, play with a thumb pick and fingers now.

I have written a lot of songs, and mainly that is what I concentrate on.I also spend a good bit of time rewriting older songs of mine, trying to improve them. Many were simple verse/chorus/verse things,so I try to add bridges, change them up a bit, whatever I can do.
