I caught some of 'Coward of County' today which I hadn't heard in a long while. He could definitely tell a story through song.

My personal opinion is favorable.

Not a fan but he's sold a shite ton of records and crossed over big time, kudos.

First Edition was legit.
Kenny covered some of the FE songs on an album called Ten Years Of Gold. Hard to find but good.
In addition to his hits, there were some good album tracks: Sweet Music Man, Am I Too Late, Buried Treasures, my fav Kenny song Tenneessee Bottle, Morgana Jones (very risqué for Kenny)

Favorable.
He had a 5-7 year run where he was as big as any country singer ever was.
Not saying he's the GOAT or anything. Just had a run that only a few have had. Late 70's to about 84-5 he was huge.
Definitely unique voice. Kind of like a country Rod Stewart quality. At the time. Rogers voice aged better than Stewart.

Went to see Rogers, Dottie West and the Oak Ridge Boys on a date once. Dottie West stopped and kissed me on the cheek coming down to the stage, fricked up my date.

I'll give Kenny a thumbs up.
We stayed at the Royal Plantation in Ochos Rios 13 years ago for our honeymoon and there was a big black bartender named Sybony that loved him some Kenny Rogers. He could sing all his songs but with a Jamaican accent. It was quite entertaining.

Love his songs but not sure he wrote a single one of his hits.

I thought Kenny Rogers was at his best with the 60s rock & roll group, the First Edition. That format worked superbly and they had several unforgettable hits, such as "Just Dropped In", "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town", "Reuben James","But You Know I Love You" and "Tell It All Brother". Some of the finest pop/rock songs ever!
His ballads were excellent too, "Lady" and "She Believes In Me" are my favorites.
Personally, I never cared for "Coward Of The County". It was immensely popular, though, so you can't argue with success.

He helped destroy country music

Not a fan of the genre but he seems to be a righteous dude.

He did write some of his stuff and produced a little. Didn't play on anything during the solo years but bass with FE
