"heavy metal"? Not so much.

I will admit Lightning Crashes and I Alone were solid. And - one you didn't mention, Overcome is my favorite by them.

The Dam at Otter Creek is one of the best opening songs for an album ever. I'll ignore the fact that you categorized Live as Metal.

If we're going to allow Alice in Chains then we have to allow Tool and Tool clearly > AiC.

While I object to "clearly" I have Tool above AIC - however, on a purely technical note - this is the "1990s" discussion, and I'm not sure a pre-Lateralus Tool trumps AIC based on their 90s work alone.

Tool had Opiate (EP), Undertow and Ænima in the 90s.

AIC had Facelift, Dirt, Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains, plus, outdoing even Nirvana, the greatest "unplugged" performance of all time.

So, once Lateralus drops - and I've made no secret that I think that the title track from that album is the best heavy song of the 21st Century, that puts them over the top - but before then - it's probably a push - Tool demonstrably with the better rhythm section, and AIC with a better guitarist and vocalist - an edge to Maynard as a songwriter, maybe.

And lets not even get into why Tool should or shouldn't be considered "heavy metal".

Saw Live at the NOLA HOB in the 90's. One of the most fired up crowds I've ever seen. HOB was busting at the seams. Great show. Ed came out and signed autographs afterward. Awesome night!

Heresy, all of this. Tool is not even top 10.

PanterA

How long of a run did they have? I am not disagreeing I am just asking. I was not a fan really but was so far up Seattle's arse at the time, there was nothing else.

I remember them being huge with the Metallica fans who were going through withdrawals. I remember them being big. Then I remember Dimebag being shot. I thought they were still PAntera when that happened.

I did not know Phil was a junkie until the documentary.

90-01. (I think Cowboys came out in 90, I know they released their last record and broke up in 01 though)

Dime was playing in Damageplan when he was killed

Around 96-97 was when the wheels started falling off though. Heroin really started sinking its teeth into Phil and it showed in a lot of their live performances. You could tell he was way off his game.

Reinventing The Steel was a nice return to form. The Great Southern Trendkill soulds like a tired band just pushing the buttons to me, whereas RTS is full of awesome songs and sounds great.

And just to be clear, Tools's Aenima is one of the best rock albums ever. I just don't put them in the metal category either. Every time I hear someone call them metal I think of that interview with Adam Jones where he says being called a metal band makes his skin crawl (or something to that effect).

One of my favorite albums - and I said, "Let's not get into" this but, since we have, Tool defies description to a certain point - some bands are like that (White Stripes - WTF genre is that? Beck? Ditto.) - Tool almost equal parts Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Soundgarden, on the musical side, and seeming to have the anger and drive of RATM, with an even better rhythm section, and better overall musical sensibilities. The guitar is almost a support instrument in the band - they're heavy, no question, but also spacey and introspective.

I think it is fair to both argue they exist in some portion of the metal spectrum, and argue that they're not really metal at all. Much like RATM, I could listen to just the drummer and bass player play for hours.

And Cryptic Writings. I mean, Megadeth should be the answer JUST ON THE STRENGTH OF THE FIRST TWO.
