Def Leppard clearly #1 - back-to-back albums with over 7 million in sales, heavily influential on the more pop-friendly "heavy music" of the era.

GnR probably #2 - they came in very late and sort of formed the "bridge" between hair metal and related genres and grunge, IMHO

Bon Jovi #3 - although they consciously sought to be the "American" Def Leppard, pretty solid through the decade as well.

Metallica #4 - this was before they killed Napster

Motley Crue #5

I was going to say, "Hey, buddy, we'd probably agree on a lot of things, musically"

Well, in 89 I was 13 so I was pretty young for most of the 80's. It is what it was...

They actually would be on my top 5 depending on the day, month and year you ask me to make a top 5 80's band.

Plateau

It's the soundtrack of my horrible, fiery crash a couple of years ago. (sarcasm)

Since this is sort of an 80s thread, Pitchfork released their top 200 songs of the 80s list this week.
