I thought about Minor Threat, but I felt their rather thin discography of only 25 songs or so kept them off my list. I went with Black Flag instead.

You guys try so hard to be edgy but you just look like morons.

A "top 5 bands of the 80's" thread with nobody listing U2 is absurd.

Listing them would be absurd. I can't stand them.

they're still undeniably the "best band of the 1980s" as recognized by virtually every music publication in existence. Would be like making a 1960's list and leaving off the Beatles.

I don't think that is exactly true and even if so music is highly subjective and people are listing their favorites, not trying to parrot a Rolling Stone list. If you think U2 is a top 5 band of the 80s, that's cool and reasonable. If you don't think they are, that's cool and reasonable. If you think people are morons for going either way on the issue, then you are probably being the moron.

Holy hyperbole, Batman!

First, this isn't true. Of course it isn't true. Heck, the Beatles aren't even undeniable the best band of the 60s due to the existence of the Rolling Stones. No band is undeniably the best. People in this very thread deny it.

Secondly, REM exists. And if you want to see a Gen X rock critic's head explode, get them talking about REM's releases on IRS records.

Thirdly, other genres exist. I mean, U2 gets the mainstream rock vote, REM gets the hipster vote, Black Flag get the punk vote, Metallica gets the metal vote, Duran Duran gets the 80s new wave vote, the Smiths get the British vote, Prince and the Revolution get the pop vote, Public Enemy gets the rap vote, and so on. And that's if those genres could agree on one band. Which they can't.

Finally, U2 wasn't even the best band Brian Eno worked with in the 80s. The Talking Heads were. I don't hate U2. I could always just take or leave them (though War is a great f'n album), but man.. their fans have no sense of proportion.

Black Flag was not the best punk band of the 80s.. Dead Kennedys had a pretty solid discog under Jello.

They aren't even close.

I would leave them off of that list too. Why would anyone list a band they don't like? And, if the best has been established by critics, what's the fricking point of asking us to list them? Oh, and U2 suck major arse except for Gloria which is ok and doesn't destroy your cred if you listen to it.
