He is an amazing entertainer. I didn't really pay attention to him until a friend took me to one of his shows, also with his Large Band. He blew me away and I went to a used CD store a few days later and bought 5 or 6 of his albums. He is tough to classify, but I do think Pontiac is country.

Did you catch him when he was touring with John Hiatt? It was just the two of them on stage and they would alternate back-and-forth. One would tell a story and then play a song and then the other would do the same. Lovett told a story about the ducks in the Peabody Hotel in Memphis that had me in tears.

No, I had a scheduling conflict unfortunately.

Bonnie Raitt played with him when I saw him. She was equally amazing. Unfortunately that's the only time I've seen him live. It was back when he had a broken leg, I think from a snow skiing accident. 2002ish.

iT'S A LIST.....Glad to see Green on Red on it although I could argue "Gravity Talks" is a better album. But Gas Food Lodging is really good.

Same goes for Old '97's...."Hitch Hike to Roam" or "Wreck Your Life" is was better than the album that made the list.

Dave Alvin's best album is "King of California"

Should Springsteen's "Nebraska" be on the list? I think so. Fred Eaglesmith? Yep. James McMurtry? Yep...for "Where'd Ya Hide the Body". Are Neil Young or The Band not americana....maybe canadicana...? What about REM's "Murmur"? I would put The Gun Club's "Sex Beat" on there even though it leans punk/blues. Thin White Rope definitely belongs on the list for "Exploring the Axis" and/or "Moonhead". And if Trace is on there, why not Wilco's "aM"?. Finally, I would put The Gourds "Dems Good Beeble" on the list....:nonepotism.

They gave the Wilco spot to the next album.

None of Tweedy's bands have ever done it for me. I was pretty sure Uncle Tupelo was going to be #1, but I feel like the only guy who just doesn't care for Tweedy's stuff. Don't know why.

Agreed that the omission of James McMurtry is bizarre. He and Steve Earle I thought were no-brainers. I liked Sturgill being on the list, though I'd have him much higher.

They got the right two Avett albums, unless you want to take off the poppier I and Love and You to put on Four Thieves Gone, but Emotionalism is their best album by leaps and bounds.

Not huge complaints, but I would've liked to see Shovels and Rope, Trampled by Turtles, and the Low Anthem. But I can see why they didn't make it. And I always want more DBT. I'd consider Brighter Than Creations Dark their most country record.

That reminds me I left off my biggest complaint. I HATE the Avett Bros, and have two Avett albums on there is criminal.

Sorry not sorry.

I really liked AM. After that, only a few individual songs.

I only like The Carpenter and think it's their best by far.

How the hell is there not a Whiskeytown album on there? Pretty sure their name is in the Wikipedia for this genre.

List isn't bad but some notables missing:

Blue Mountain - Homegrown
The Gourds - Stadium Blitzer
Drivin-n-Cryin - Whisper Tames the Lion
The Silos - Cuba

I really don't know where to put them. Catch The Wind, Straight To Hell(Maybe) and Good Day Everyday, say Alt, but the rest says rock.

That's why I went with the earlier album. Catch the Wind, Friend Song, Clear Daze, Good Day Every Day, Check Your Tears, Blue Ridge Way all seem country to me.

Not a bad list. I think it would need to include something by The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, or Gram Parsons.

Yeah Lyle doesn't make sense on there to me. Going down that route would take me to McMurtry. Someone in comments mentions REK and John Hiatt. It's weird, for some reason when I think of Hiatt I think of Son Volt and Steve Earle, and the only one I've mentioned in this post yet that I really think of as "alt country" is SV.

To me, alt country is Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt and Ryan Adams projects. I think it's a tough genre to use for the expansive purposes of Paste.

Emmy Lou is country, McMurtry/Isbell/Lyle Lovett are Americana and DBT is southern rock.

I think Conor Oberst as Bright Eyes is misclassified when people say that his weeping emo is indie folk, much less alt-country.
