Some of the singers I would include are not necessarily the most well-polished, but they have a power and memorizing quality that cannot be ignored.
I would include:
Jennifer Holiday (most powerful voice I have ever heard)
Patti LaBelle (I've always preferred her over Aretha)
Aretha Franklin
Etta James
Whitney Houston
Janis Joplin (unpolished as hell but the soul in her voice is incredible)
Christina Aguilera (this will get some laughs, but dammit that woman can sing)
Adele
Tina Turner
Ann Wilson (my favorite female rock singer)

I couldn't justify including both her and Aguilera, but I like that nomination.

I figured Benatar would get some love at one point or another.

Benetar is a good call.
Aguilera started as pop fluff. It was well played. Took a few songs for folks to realize how ridiculous her voice was/is. Whitney Houston formula too. Dance With Somebody gave no indication that it was unlike any other pop out at the time.

I always thought Debbie Harry had a strong voice:

I agree - their music didn't always call for it, but they weren't hiding behind a bunch of machines back then, either. What you heard was what you got.
I think Blondie - as a band, musicianship-wise - is underrated, somewhat, because of the image of the band as defined by Debbie Harry.

Parallel Lines and Eat To the Beat were strong albums. Strong.
And Clem Burke was a hellaciously good drummer.

First one I thought of. First time I ever heard of her was about 18 years or so ago. She was on tour opening up fir Edwin McCain. I was absolutely blown away by her performance. She was as drink as I've seen anyone on state and still killed it. She's had some issues with addiction that I think kept her from making it to the top f the charts but she is one of the most powerful female vocalists you will see. If you have a chance, go see her live.

You have to have some vocal chops to sound good hanging upside down and spinning from the ceiling at the Grammy's. That's my justification for her.
