I've always found this to be a haunting song:

Jugband Blues - Pink Floyd

Considering the context, I find this song to be extremely haunting.

Another is the entire Alice in Chains Unplugged album. I've only listened to it 2 or 3 times and it's been about 10 years since the last.

Nirvana- Tell Me Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Nine Inch Nails- Hurt (I know someone will say Cash's version but I still do not think it touches NIN's)

A Perfect Circle - Orestes
Deftones - Digital Bath
NIN - A Warm Place (I love Reznor's instrumental tracks)

Thanks for bringing up Mad Season...I dig their album just as much as the AIC catalog.

Agreed...

I would throw in Do You Realize by the Flaming Lips

Flaming Lips

Do you realize?, that you have the most beautiful face
Do you realize?, we're floating in space,
Do you realize?, that happiness makes you cry
Do you realize?, that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

And Superstar by Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth

Loneliness
Is such a sad affair
And I can hardly wait
To be with you again

What to say
To make you come again
Come back to me again
And play your sad guitar

Don't you remember you told me you love me baby?
You said you'd be coming back this way again baby
Baby baby baby baby, oh baby
I love you, I really do

You forgot some of my favorites - Tonight's the Night and Old Man. Neil has tons of introspective songs that you can literally feel his anguish when he performs them.

Florence and the Machine

Never Let Me Go - Unplugged version.

Get chills every time I hear it. I'm going to have it played as my and my wife's ashes are spread out to sea.

Here's one that very few would probably think of for this genre but it is a great one :

Superstar - Karen Carpenter
