Most of the Byrds early success was covering Bob Dylan songs.

Well yeah, but it was the Byrds having the success

And anyway, I actually believe The Byrds, for all their enormous importance in folk-rock, were even more important in their impact on country-rock, which they pioneered, setting the stage for the Eagles and their innumerable '70s imitators. And as I said, you can can still hear the Byrds in alt.country acts like Wilco among many others.

You can definitely slice up the Byrds influence a couple of ways... with and without Gram... but IMO, they are a huge influence on many genres...

Peter Buck owes a huge debt to McGuinn... jangle pop..

Even the VU (who I agree are influential) were influenced by them...

You're the guy who said the most influential band was the Grateful Dead

I will judge your opinion accordingly

Jam bands are bigger and better than "alt-country"

And Jerry Garcia alone is an icon of rock music and more importantly American culture.

Then you need to acknowledge people like Sebastian, Flying Burrito Bros., Townes Van Zandt, etc. They laid the groundwork for the Grateful Dead, Poco, et al.I still think most of them trace their roots back to Dylan. He was the innovator and pretty much set the standard.

4 of the 11 tracks on their Greatest HIts album were written by Bob Dylan.

The grateful dead are a piece if Americana whether you like them or not. Have to be in the discussion

There is a pretty direct tie in here...

The Byrds influence was way more the sound than anything, they could've covered Sinatra (ok, may be a reach)..

I dont think he's doubting the influence of Dylan, rather speaking specifically of the Byrds...

I never said I didn't like the Dead. The discussion is not about who was any good but about who had the most influence over those that followed. The Dead have their place in the chain but they are not at the beginning.

Because you say somebody is the most influential doesn't they were the only influence. IMO The Byrds' success -- and yes, one of their #1 hits was a Dylan song -- was the key moment for folk-rock, and Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (featuring one Gram Parsons) was the key for country-rock. And if you accept they were the biggest movers for country-rock, that includes in their sphere of influence not only all the Eagles copycats but cowpunk bands like the Long Ryders and Green on Red up to alt.country and Americana today.

But I must hasten away, for I have stayed too long already, and we have seen Souljah posting about how The Grateful Dead were "bigger and better". Soon we will be overrun with Widespread Panic and Phish, then the land will be laid barren by posts nominating Tupac.

So farewell my friends, and good luck....

The grateful dead did more than just inspire musicians. They were in direct correlation to a movement in this country

I would put the Beach Boys right up with there for most influential especially in the last 10 years in indie.

It has become a cliche to cite Pet Sounds as an influence nowadays

Morrison would have been a huge influence if he hadn't self destructed so early.
