Velvet underground should be mentioned. Big influence on the indie scene
They would be #2 all time, but were not part of the op, so I did not think they were in play.

The Beatles by a mile.

Replace LZ with Hendrix. I like LZ but so much of their stuff was ripped off various blues artists it doesn't make much sense to include them in the top 5.

If you throw in Velvet Underground you have to bring in Sonic Youth

In terms of my own preference, however:

Zeppelin
Stones
Doors
Floyd
Beatles

The Byrds influence was way more the sound than anything, they could've covered Sinatra (ok, may be a reach)..

they had no problem modernizing a 40s wartime song. LINK
bet they woulda killed doing a sinatra.

gene clark never gets the credit he probably deserves too. splits to do a solo country-rock record while the byrds release some average records, sees his career go nowhere, only to watch the byrds snag parsons and release sweetheart of the rodeo. had to suck.

ETA: You could switch the Doors and Floyd. Neither of them were all that influential.

exactly

No question Beatles were #1 of that list, and Doors would be #5, and I really think the Doors did not become an influence until years later. But, in terms of most influential, the above list should include Black Sabbath and Bob Dylan...I can see Hendrix added to this list also. I think the Velvet Underground and Roxy Music had a big influence on later music.

Indeed -- check out this thread and scroll down a few posts

Nothing the Byrds did through Sweetheart of the Rodeo was "average", but I see your point about Gene Clark being underappreciated

My favorite thing about this thread is all the people ranking Zeppelin ahead of the Stones, when Zep, at its core, is a knock off of the Stones.

Modern rock descends primarily from five bands: The Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, the Who, and the Velvet Underground. Though Dylan is the patron saint of pop culture meaning anything. Without Bob, we're listening to nothing but bands like the Black Eyed Peas and "silly love songs".
