Quadrophenia-The Who, every track is perfectly polished, flows extremely well in the context of the opera. What else would one expect from the best rock band the world has ever seen?

I've never listened to this Who album beginning to end in one sitting.

Will check it out.

Trust me, you'll be glad you did. Not sure what your musical tastes consist of, but if you like amazing songwriting married to brilliant melodies and emotional catharsis, you'll have a blast with it.

Didn't read this whole thread but am I the only one who thinks "You in Reverse" is Built to Spill's best album (others listed on 1st page are also good just not as good imo)

to contribute

Black on Both Sides is an amazing listen from start to finish

and

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga would be for sure except for track #2 which gets a skip from me every single time

It's my third or fourth favorite BtS album, but it has a few tracks I could skip, whereas I find PFNO and KILAS absolutely perfect.

Conventional Wisdom, Goin Against Your Mind, Liar, Traces, Gone and Wherever You Go are all top notch though.

Good list.

Stevie Ray Gone put out some great stuff, but I'm not sure a "best of" collection can be considered a great album.

I was at Alpine Valley in Lake Geneva, WI, the venue of his last show. His helicopter took off and never made it to Illinois.

Wow. What a treat. This was their attempt at a Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road type album. Say what you want about Pete Townsend as a lead guitar player (I think he was a great rhythm player who struggled to be a serviceable lead player), but he was a musical visionary for heavy music, sometimes lost in the shadow of Page.

Whatever he lacked in lead playing he compensated for with genius songwriting and composing. I actually think Townshend was a better lead player than most admit, just he wasn't a Page-like shredder. Some of my favorite guitar parts are from him.

Also, I feel this album blows Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road out of the water. We have to understand it's only these 3 instrumentalists responsible for the sound of Quadrophenia, which is astounding compared to the 20-30 musicians used for Pet Sounds and Pepper.

Well, Ox is a GOAT candidate on his instrument, Loon was more of a keyboard player than a drummer and, give credit to Townsend again - he made it work, his relative lack of virtuosity on the instrument notwithstanding. He understood the full impact/possibilities of synthesizers way before most mainstream rock bands did.

(Zeppelin did a lot with 3 instrumentalists, too - but when it is the right 3 instrumentalists, it can be epic. )

I gave you the upvote to counter the downvote which was surely for you referring to them as the best band that ever lived.

It is a great (and tremendously coherent) album, and I can´t believe I forgot to mention it.

Holy shite nobody mentioned Prince's "Dirty Mind" or "Purple Rain" easily two of his greatest single-LP releases

I mentioned his LP where he did everything, was that Dirty Mind?

As to Purple Rain, I was absolutely burned out on what to me was a pompous sound (probably born of the videos).

Nope don't see it in this thread. Honestly, "Purple Rain" impresses the hell out of me straight from the opener "Let's Go Crazy" one of the greatest rock songs ever. Straight up no filler and "Dirty Mind" is such a cool and F-you album all done by one man. What an artist.

It's been my favorite since the 70's. All the band members were at their peak; Entwistle and Moon were in sync and drove the music, Daltry's vocals were at their best, and Townsend had written his most consistent album.

Rock didn't get much better afterwards, maybe the best rock album ever made.
