Although I disagree with his politics, it was sad to listen to Paul Simon singing Bridge over Troubled Water at the DNC yesterday.

A beautiful voice that once was young has now grown old.

His former co-hart, Art Garfunfle, was the original singer of that song.

Yeah that's not his song to sing. garfunkel sings that. I saw Paul in October and he still sounded fine to me.

Age can be cruel on some....

With that said, I was listening to some S&G's Concert In Central Park ('81). Man that was good shite, even on Simon's solo songs - especially on American Tune.

He sounded like hell at the SNL 40th. It sucks the years have caught up. Can't be young forever.

Well, he sang it horribly. He just embarrassed himself singing it. If he knew he couldn't sing it and it was going to sound that bad then he should have told the DNC to get Garfunkel to sing it.

If he can still sing then I sure know why he let Garfunkel sing it.

BTW, I did get to see S&G live way back in the 70s on Long Island, New York where they opened for The Doors.

That was a great concert and every time it's shown on PBS I love watching it.

You can tell the two of them had fun performing together again.

That's what I thought and it is good to see we can both be honest about it and agree that it was horrible since you know we disagree with each other about most things.

Anyone who says it wasn't GHASTLY is either tone deaf or a liar.

I'll never understand why people have to put this out there. Are you that scared of being branded a liberal that you have to make a statement before talking about an artist?

Always liked Simon's music, but I must be getting old too, because formerly, stuff like Steisand's politics or Madonna's promiscuity, Diana Ross Sting or Robert Plant's abandoning group mates for greener pastures didn't faze me..

But, these two recent articles, have me seeing PS in a different light..

It's well known in the biz that Simon is an a-hole

My fave Simon story: S&G cut an acoustic folk number that flopped and they went their separate ways. After the Byrds launched folk rock w/ "Mr Tambourine Man", a Columbia producer named Tom Wilson took the S&G track, added an electric guitar and rock rhythm section, then released it as a single, all w/o S&G's knowledge. Shortly afterward "The Sounds of Silence" was the #1 song in the country.

S&G got back together and went on tour. They ended up doing in LA doing the Shindig TV show. Simon went to the guitarist in the show's band and tried to tell him how to do the "SoS" guitar solo, adding "this is the way I played it on the record."

The guitarist replied, "Yeah, I already know how to play the solo."

Simon: "How do you know?"

Guitarist: "Because I played it on the record."

Ego and venue hurt these guys too.

Paul McCartney singing at the 2012 Olympics!!! He ended, I believe the opening ceremony, by singing Hey Jude. It was brutal. His voice is old and too small. He in no way can command a stadium, like in the olympics.

A small venue or club or theater he'd have sounded fine. But he sounded like a bird squawking in an avalanche with 60 thousand people.

Add to that Simon standing up there alone. They even bring a second person up there to try to harmonize like Garfunkel??

One of the huge regrets of Simon's professional career is that he let Artie take the lead on the song. Artie tried to talk him into doing it. "It's a beautiful song. It should be your song." Simon was convinced Artie had the better voice (which he did generally) for that song (and Simon was right).

And the rest, as they say, is music history.

Just an FYI - they can put the box in line for a live mix. They probably didn't have that for the DNC.

So, his professional sound crew can do pitch correction at a "live" show, but since the DNC is wired for speeches, not live music, may not have been an option so you got the raw, "current" Paul Simon.

Plus, it seems he was about half in the bag - ~3 drinks past where he should have been if he was going to perform. But, hell, it's Paul Simon - he probably thought, "frick it. It's 1 song. I can do that with a few drinks in me."
