This is kind of a spinoff thread from TheOcean's how do you find new music thread.

I started thinking that one way I find new bands is as opening acts for other bands that I like. I found out about Gov't Mule that way and also John Butler Trio, both of which are a couple of my favorite bands now. Also many years ago I was at a Bruce Cockburn concert and a guy named Pierce Pettis opened for him. I really liked Pettis and then a few years after that I went to see a show where he was the main act. He had a guy open for him named Richard Gilewitz who was amazing.

So what opening acts have you guys seen that you didn't know much about before but ended up liking a lot?

Saw Radiohead open for REM around 95 or 96. I had never heard of them, and had no idea they did Creep until they closed with it. Still really didn't like them until a couple years later.

Saw Sleater Kinney open for Pearl Jam. I had heard of them at the time but never really gave them a listen.

2 best I can think of.

Saw the Avett Brothers open up for the Allman Brothers many years ago. Instantly fell in love with them, try to see them once a year if they're close by.

The Dead Confederate at Voodoo 07 comes to mind right off. Was literally laying down middle of the day and heard this good music and went walk all the way to the other end to check these guys.

1997 in BR Incubus opening for Sugar Ray and 311

2004 GLove opening for 311

Kylessa for Mastodon in 2008 HOB show

Saw Torche open for The Sword and then Boris about two weeks apart. Their album quickly became my favorite of 2008 after that.

Thought of another one. I had never heard of STS9 before seeing them open for Gov't Mule at Red Rocks probably 10-12 years ago. Really liked it...very chill.

LOL...forgot about him. Saw him at a DMB show and became an instant fan.

I saw Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins open for the RHCP. It was right after Ten and Gish came out, before both of them blew up

In the last several months I've been blown away by two opening bands, The Shivas opening for the Dandy Warhols and Royal Thunder opening for The Sword. But honestly, that's become much more the exception than the rule. Most opening bands I've seen over the last decade were just this side of forgettable.

Saw Tame Impala open for MGMT in Houston 2010. Been one of my favorite bands ever since.

That's quite often the case and a lot of times I find myself secretly hoping that there's no opening act. But those times you do find a gem for an opener makes all the other times worth it.

Saw Guns n' Roses open up for Motley Crue on the Girls, Girls, Girls tour in 1987 right after Appetite for Destruction was released. They were fricking bad arse. They were just as loud and rocking as the Crue with half the equipment the Crue had.
