Of the super groups who are the best musicians?

Sometimes I feel like the supergroups can be overshadowed by their front men. Who in your opinion is the best rock band musically?
Been on a classic rock tear recently and I will go with Queen. Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor are incredible together and seem a bit underrated if that is possible. To have that level of technical and musical ability with only three guys is amazing. I think Freddie overshadowed them in many ways but as a group they are about as good as it gets.
Tough to put them over Led Zep, The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones etc but just my opinion

The trio of Mick, John, and Lindsey in Fleetwood Mac have to be up there. I think their musicianship is often overlooked because of the pop nature of their songs but they are fantastic musicians.

Rush.
Not even a big Rush fan, but damn?
Listening to them is like bluegrass or classical guitar and classical music. Not my thing but damn they are good.

Dammit I though this debate would become a bit more flushed out, but honestly, it's almost impossible to say anyone else.
Geddy Lee is one of the only bassists who can stand alongside Chris Squire and hold his own. His performance with Yes during the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction was a near-flawless substitution. And say what you want about his style of singing, but those high notes are almost impossible to replicate.
In nearly every other band on the planet Alex Lifeson would be considered the best musician hands down. His rhythms and solos are on par with the best in the business. He might not have the riffs that Iommi and Page crafted, but, holy shite, is his repertoire intimidating.
And then, there is the one and only Nei Peart. In addition to being arguably the greatest percussionist of the 20th century, he is also one of the most brilliant lyricists of prog music.
If you can't listen to albums like 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures, etc. and recognize the genius at work, then I don't know what to say.
Led Zeppelin is a great nomination, but they're just a little lacking on the technical side of things for my taste. Still, they formed one of the tightest and heaviest rhythm sections in rock music.
I feel compelled to give Tool at least a mention because of the brilliance of Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor. And while Maynard's vocals may seem unorthodox, some of his screams and melodies are as good as any I've ever heard. Sadly, what hurts Tool in this discussion is Adam Jones. I love Jones' riffs and unique style, but I would never even think to mention him on a list of the top-50 guitar players of all-time (as I would with someone such as Lifeson or Page).

The Police are a personal favorite...

I was never a huge Allman Bros. fan, but saw them in an outdoor amphitheatre in Atlanta in 2008, and musically they were amazing. Maybe the best I've ever seen.

Been thinking about something in a similar vein. I love classic rock and specifically the British invasion of the sixties and seventies. Ranking the talent level within the super groups of classic rock.
Led Zeppelin
1.John Paul Jones - most talented musician
2.John Bonham- incredible drummer that was the backbone to led zep's sound
3.Jimmy Page- Probably more creative as a producer than talented guitarist.
4.Robert Plant-Most people either love or hate his singing style
Beatles
1.Paul McCartney-could do it all
2.George Harrison-very undervalued did not really show his true abilities until a solo artist
3.John Lennon-incredible song writer
4.Ringo Star-steady drummer for the greatest collection of song writers ever
Who
1.John Entwistle-most talented
2.Pete Townshend-main song writer for The Who - weak lead guitarist
3.Keith Moon-unique drummer with his own sound
4.Roger Daltrey-shared sing duties with Pete not usually mentioned when great rock singers are listed

Most prog acts of the 70's: Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Rush etc all had musicians representing the pinnacle of their respective instruments.

Define 'supergroup' ?
To me this has always meant a new band made of already established (star) musicians. Like Blind Faith did with Ginger Baker, Stevie Windwood, and Eric Clapton.... or the Traveling Wilbury's with Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynn and the very-over-hyped t.Petty.... or perhaps the last curtain call of a benefit festival.

Agreed.
Like CNSY, Blind Faith, Ginger Baker's Air Force, UK, Asia, and Texas Tornados, to name some of the older bands.

I was thinking of Organic bands that rose to the top of the industry not the one off all star type bands
I thought about Rush of course and technically they are superior but they are sort of one dimensional. Can't see them making something creative and soft like the beginning of Bohemian Rhapsody or Going to California or Behind Blue Eyes
Just can't imagine Rush making a ballad or anything with heart or genuine feeling but on the technical side they are second to none

You've got two questions here. One, "Who are the best musicians?" and "Who is the best rock band musically?"
Both are legit questions with no right answer . . .
But in terms of musical flawlessness I'd go with Boston.
Brad Delp and Tom Scholz.

Deep Purple had a genius on keys in Jon Lord, Blackmore could shred, Ian Paice is unbelievable as a drummer, and Ian Gillian could wail.

Yeah I know, not very clear on my part and there is no right answer
Best overall musicians to me includes style, diversity, subtlety and technical ability. I don't mean just playing a lot of notes very fast and loud. I also don't really look at bands with huge membership and tons of add ons, just a tight group that make magic together and shine without their front man included
Boston is an amazing band, surprised no one said Yes or even metal acts like Metallica or Motley Crue
