Wow a Menace to Society reference in a Derek n Dominos thread. And I though VOR beginning here was odd.

Layla the song is overrated and certainly one of the more hackneyed songs ever. Immediately turn it off when I hear it.

The album is underrated. One of my all time favs Why does Love Got To Be So Sad", starts off like a house on fire and ends real soft with Duane and Eric trading riffs; beautiful to me. Really don't care for the straight blues songs on the album, the rest of the album is very good.

Eric always said that Buddy Guy was his main influence and his tone is exactly alike, which I don't particularly care for either one.

EC is a hit or miss artist, which is actually better than most. Really like the song Bad Love also. He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 3 or 4 times I think. But Madonna, Beastie Boys, Michael Jackson, etc... in the R & R HOF also. Just the idea of such an institution is anathema to me.

Can't Find My Way Home is a great song. Darling You Look Wonderful Tonight is smarmy sickiness.

I have a canonical rock playlist that I sync to my phone—the list has everything I see as essential and must have with me at all times—and automatically fill the rest of the phone with random songs. Layla is on the list. I haven't left the house without that album handy in at least seven years.

Happy to hear you say this. I hate both of their tones. Few people that use active pickups have a good tone, imo. Both Clapton and Guy have screechy, brittle tones that result from too much distortion in the front end and not enough smooth overdrive from the power section.

As for Layla, I think the song is sappy but I like it anyway. The album is probably Clapton's masterwork. He never did anything as consistently good after that.

It is a damn shame there are no quality recordings of the two live shows Duane played in.

I typically find Clapton and his guitar playing and song writing boring and vomit inducing so much so that I'd rather him beat my brains in with the guitar, rather them hear him play it... and this album is no different..
