This album was quite a departure from everything before it. All the 'in the italian neighborhood' vibe gave way to a very different type of album that took many by surprise. Maybe because he had just survived a near-death experience after wrecking on his motorcycle he had a different mindset when he went back into the studio.
From the pro-union Allentown to the fabulous Pressure and hitting on subjects like the Vietnam War in Goodnight Saigon this was unlike anything he had released previously.
I loved this album growing up; playing it more than any of his others (although Glass Houses was my favorite up until this point) and it set the stage for Innocent Man which got much more airplay and generated more mainstream hits.
For some reason I never hear any of the tracks from this album on Pandora or Spotify unless I specify this album which is odd.
Here's to Pressure my all time BJ fav
PRESSURE!
eta I grew up thinking he was saying "lonely countS in your face" and never understood how this made it on the radio especially since the album had an 'explicit lyrics' warning right on the cover.
turns out that was because in Laura he sings "feel like a frickING fool" and not the countS lyric.

I could only give you one. Thread is not legit. You could have just said favorite. But then if you did, well...

stranger may be a good album but its the ONLY one played on pandora and every shitty 'classic rock' station around the country so maybe i'm just sick to death of those tracks.
nylon curtain at a minimum is critically underrated. it was sandwiched between "stranger/52nd street/glass houses" -- and -- "innocent man"
seems radio either plays 'she's always a woman' or 'uptown girl' and ignore the genius that is NC

Nylon is probably not in my top 4. I really hate newer Billy Joel.

especially with Scandinavian Skies.
I'll take any album in the 70's.

Side 2 had lots of Beatlesque moments.
Some years back when asked if he ever listened to his own music he stated not really, but if he did it might be Nylon Curtain.

Surprises and Laura also have heavy Beatles influence, especially John. I heard Billy talk about that album and he said producer Phil Ramone told him 'you sure do have a lot of John in you now'. I love 'Laura' but recognize the greatness of Saigon and Pressure (the album version). I don't think it is his best album IMO but I have come to appreciate it more and more.
I've been on a Joel kick this week. I loved An Innocent Man album (don't like Uptown Girl though) and enjoy 'Running On Ice', 'This Is The Time' and 'A Matter of Trust' from The Bridge. 'Angry Young Man', 'Sometimes A Fantasy' and 'Stiletto' and 'Zanzibar' are always in rotation for me. My all time fav Joel song is 'All For Leyna'.
I also thought the Russian live album was very good and I prefer the rendition of 'Big Man on Mulberry Street' on here. The corresponding TV specials for it were great as well (one you don't see anymore and the other from time to time) but I enjoy the back masking on the side three fade out where he is yelling "Leave them alone. For God's sake leave them alone!"
Nothing wrong with some 80's Billy Joel

Yeah, and we wore out Piano Man in the dorm but as time went on I liked him less and less.
Springsteen syndrome maybe.

Sorry, but Songs In The Attic is where it's at. If you want to exclude a live album, go ahead, but that record is the truest representation of Billy Joel (and his great band).

Even tho I think Glass Houses is his best album, I think Scenes From An Italian Restaurant is his best song. In fact, I think it's one of the top 5 greatest pop/rock songs ever written.
