I'm in the process of buying a PureSalem guitar (see link):
LINK
I'd not heard of PureSalem until I saw one of their guitars on reverb.com--loved the look, checked out and love the PureSalem story (they're VERY lefty-friendly )--plus I'm getting the instrument at a good price.

Anyway--what lesser known brands have you followed, liked and bought from? Any unknown or little known brands that, from your experience, deserve a look and a chance?

Acoustic, but I bought and love a second hand guitar I stumbled across at Guitar Center.

Blue Ridge BR-160. It is a real company can be contacted in San Fran I believe. But produced in China. It's purpose is to be a Martin D-28 copy. From materials to bracing. It sounded immediately like "my guitar" on first strum. I've strummed many real D-28 and HD-28's since I bought it and it is close enough for the price.

I have a couple of Burns electrics. A Steer made famous by Billy Bragg and Cobra. Both have trisonic (Brian May) pickups. Burns makes some really funky looking guitars you either love or hate.

Here is my Steer

On electrics, I stick to the Majors.

On acoustic,it only takes a few seconds to pick them all up,strum and pick a bit and check them out,and there are lots of good ones out there now. Companies are focusing on certain sounds and niches now,and that makes it interesting.

For electrics, the USA divisions of Hamer (used market, they are now out of business) and G&L immediately come to mind.

For acoustics, Seagull.

They still a secret?

I know you own a place or are a Luthier or both. So I will admit that you know more than me. . But I thought it was known now?

ETA. Guild was mentioned? Thought they were well known too? They are priced that way.

Of course the only reason I KNOW of them was Alice in Chains Unplugged.

Anybody know that model?

Guild F50. Not sure if it was an older Westerley made one or a new one made in Corona. I have a Westerley made F47 cutaway that I love.

The show was shot in 93-94? When did Guild switch factories? Or do they make guitars in 3 factories including China?

Sounds dangerous with sweaty hands and age of guitar. And sounds like it may sound horrendous?

I think they sound great.. It's what King Buzzo plays..

Pinkus plays a flying v bass from them... it sounds great, too..

I'm sure they could sound bad, too..

Considering most of the guys I cater to are either unaware of Seagull, or have heard of them but don't know the quality and the subsequent value they pack for the price - particularly on the used market - yes, I'd say they are at the very least somewhat of a secret.

Keep in mind there are a LOT of people out there that don't read guitar mags, surf guitar websites, hang out at guitar shops, etc., so their retail exposure and advertising impressions are limited, so much that in some cases anyone not named Fender or Gibson could very well be deemed unknown.

More importantly, Seagull is a lesser known brand that's readily available (they have an extensive dealer network, and they have been on the market long enough that clean used examples abound), and they are likely within the budgets of average folks on this forum.

FWIW, I don't sell Seagulls, they just consistently impress me.

Fair enough. I think they are a secret like,Cabo was a secret little resort town 20 years ago though. People are catching on.

Ever work on anything that you didn't want to work on or were nervous? Like somebody rolling in with a pre war Martin? I only ask because you're here and I happened to be in a shop the other day. The tech working was talking to his customer, and asked him before he left if he could have the mandolin back for a second to take pics with it on his work bench because he had never seen one much less worked on one of that quality. I wandered over after hearing that, but he already got his pics and the owner had put it in the case

I'm a big fan of the Japanese imitations from the 70's and 80's, specifically their hollow and semi-hollow bodies. Brands like Greco, Burny, and Tokai. I play a Greco ES-335 knockoff from the 80's, and I would put it up against any Gibson.

Some really cool pieces cross my bench at times too. Nothing to get nervous about. Reputable luthiers treat all instruments as if they were a pre-war Martin, a pre-CBS Fender or a McCarty-era Gibson. They are all very valuable to their owners in some way. That being said, you'd go nuts and never get anything done if you let nerves or fear come into play.

Bought a CS6- great playability. Got s22 and holdsworth pickups, very nice sound. Keep in mind I'm lefty so pickins are slim

Me too. You might want to check out PureSalem--they're a LEFTY FRIENDLY manufacturer, all their models come in left hand versions at no extra cost.

I'll be getting my PureSalem Mendiola in a day or two. Check 'em out on youtube.

And check out Jerry's Lefty Guitars in Sarasota (on the web). I've got a couple nice guitars from him; he's a great guy.
