Ultimately, a jury comprised of five women and three men heard dueling opinions regarding "Blurred Lines" and decided to order Thicke and Williams to pay $4 million in copyright damages plus profits attributable to infringement, which for Thicke was determined to be $1.8 million and for Williams was determined to be $1.6 million. Both escaped statutory damages as the infringement was found not to be willful.

Admittedly, I'm not a connoisseur of Marvin Gaye's music so I have been listening to "Got to Give it Up" to figure out what went wrong. Can someone point out specifically what was considered stolen about it? This isn't Vanilla Ice stealing from Queen. I can't figure out why this was decided? It's actually kind of scary that something similar amounts to that kind of money in damages.

Having a cowbell keep a similar beat doesn't seem to warrant this kind of decision.

the problem lies in horrible IP/copywrite/trademark laws that stifle creativity.

Got To Give It Up is one hell of a great tune.

The best thing about Blurred Lines is Weird Al's Word Crimes.

I think it is a clear ripoff of Marvin Gaye's song.

Very much similar to vanilla ice and Queen.

Thicke and Pharrell made $17 million off the song.

Good....blatant rip off. I love hot nekid models but that song was a suckass copy. But there are a lot of suckass copies that never get prosecuted. Alan Thicke is a douchebag so throw the book at him.

LINKI really wanted to punch Marvin's daughter in the face when she came out of the courtroom acting like she was just put through a murder trial. The bitch was just awarded millions of dollars because her father was talented and she sounds like she can barely keep the tears at bay.

So... does Bob Marley's family have a case against every reggae artist that came after him?

So, that is the verdict with no more to collect? It does not affect future earnings on the song?

I would guess that generally the same ratio would apply to future earnings

total revenue from the song, but they each made a little over 5 million from that one song. 7 million to the record company and all of the other people involved.

Does no one remember that this whole thing started when Pharrell and Thicke sued the Gaye Estate preemptively.

They really did bring the fight to her. I'd feel worse for her if this hadn't been the verdict.
