My favorite band of all-time, by a good margin, but I feel like The Band incorporated more 'American' styles than the ABB did. I can see where you're coming from, though.

I'm assuming you've read Mystery Train by Greil Marcus? He basically makes that very case, showing how the Band represents the culmination of the various musical styles.

I read the book for a music class in college and wrote a counterargument for my final research paper that the Grateful Dead is a more appropriate choice (plus, they're actually freaking American).

If America is nothing but a bunch of smug I know better than you types filled with self-recrimination and a focus on the past, then the Band is probably as good as any other representation. But if America represents something more than that, then I would propose the Beach Boys. They represent more of the optimism and hope for a better future that makes America what it is.

Allman Brothers
Blues + Jazz + Rock

The Band is like one of those movies the critics like but that I just don't get.
