Indie/Alternative Obsession

Because we've all heard the mainstream stuff on the radio so we're trying to share things that aren't necessarily going to get discovered otherwise IMO.

It's not just this board. With the rise of the internet and file sharing, people have more options and are realizing there is more out there than just what it's on the radio.

Because it's a forum of people who love music. Usually, when someone gets more mainstream, they try to perfect their music and it is way more produced by people outside the group. When this happens, it loses what the band's real fans loved about them imo. Songs written to make good music are way better than songs written to sell more copies, and you might call it opinion, but I think it's fact, and that's why you see more people talking about indie and other stuff of that nature on here.

I honestly think it's simply the case that pop music isn't the best music out there right now. I do believe that music that becomes pop music simply because it is too catchy to not be liked by the masses is good music. But this doesn't happen a ton. Lumineers, Fun., and Foster The People are three bands that pop in my head that became pop simply because one or more of their songs were simply meant for the masses. I like all of those groups.

What I'm getting at, is if you look back to the 80s, the music that was being played on your mainstream radio was pretty good music. Who is going to argue that Michael Jackson sucked? And on top of that music wasn't as accessible, so even if there was better music out there being made, the common music consumer never would have heard it.

Now we have:
(a) music on the mainsream radio that is arguably not that good, and
(b) easy access to any other type of music in the world. Whatever floats your boat or finds your lost remote.

I listen to more indie stuff than I do mainstream radio stuff, but I also call them exactly like I see them. So, I'm not going to hesitate to say that I think "Call Me Maybe" is an excellent song. But I think it's the exception to the rule.

I hate to say it, but people who listen to music outside of top 40 radio tend to be more passionate and want to talk about it and discuss it... whether that be alt/rap/indie/americana/classic rock, etc

While off topic, this is why I argue the 1980s is the best decade for music. The stuff in the top 40 was actually pretty good and the underground stuff was amazing as well. Throw in two brand new genres which would come to dominate music (post-punk or whatever it is called these days and hip hop).

The 80s gives us Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna. It also gives us cotton candy like Duran Duran and INXS. Then it gives us Run DMC, Public Enemy, and Eric B and Rakim. Lift the lid, and there's the Minutemen, REM, the Replacements, and Minor Threat.

Fabulous decade for music. The rules broke down. Makes you wonder why it can't happen now.

While I hate hair metal with the passion of a thousand burning suns, Huey Lewis was pretty inoffensive pop. Billy Ocean, admittedly, was bizarrely popular in the 80s, but I think his bland pop is pretty similar to today's bland pop. And Phil Collins is sort of an underrated songsmith. I genuinely like Collins' solo work. And 80s Whitney Houston blows the doors off of her current batch of imitators.

'80s Whitney or Adele? I'll take Whitney.
