90s: Grunge
00s: The "the" bands
10s: Crappy pop "folk" bands

In the last of these fads.

They will be remembered like No Doubt is relative to the 90s ska scene. Some decent tunes, but not considered one of the It Bands from former scenesters.

In case you're wondering, Deer Tick is the Less Than Jake of the scene.

What bands of the the 90s have staying power at this point? REM, Pearl Jam, STP, Counting Crows? Will any of them have the legacy of bands that came before?

I think Mumford can continue to be successful. Talented, good songwriters, international appeal, why not?

It just isn't the same as it used to be. There are beloved bands from the last decade that nobody pays any attention to. How will Guster be remembered? The National? Ryan Adams? Much greater volume of acts, much more diversity in music, etc., means this is going to be hard to predict. I do think that ultimately, the cross-generational acts will have the greatest chance of significant legacy. REM, for example. I don't know about Mumford, but they'll have a far better chance than most top 40 stuff, electronic music, etc.

I didn't outright dismiss them, but I found them too wordy and self important. Then I heard them sing the line "the valley of your heart" and I was done with them.

metallica, foo fighters, soundgarden, white zombie, radiohead, green day, deftones are all bands that got their big pushes, or started in the 90s and are still touring and headlining today.

As posers. They borrowed an aesthetic that they didn't really have a connection to and rode it to some fame and fortune. But they can't really do much from there b/c the foundation of their style is inauthentic: they don't have any artistic progression to make unless they can strike lightning and co-opt another style. But that will just reveal them as the frauds they were before.

Hopefully we never see them again.

As Toad The Wet Sprocket, or Collective Soul

Great songs and musicianship. But with no real home on the radio or video channels, they will slowly be forgotten through endless touring.

(I like all 3 bands, by the way)
