Home stereo. I've asked before.

What is the best device or best way to get music from devices (Apple) through a home theater system. I have a very nice Onkyo receiver. Music played through my device now is quiet and if turned up there is a notable hiss.
I realize CD quality sound through a phone or tablet is probably not possible but what's the closest?

Do you mean you want your iPhone to run through your home stereo?

I have a Denon Receiver and connect my iphone and ipad via bluethooth with crystal clear sound

I was going to suggest the same thing. 1 to 2

Can you run a single small plug to an optical linear plug in on your receiver?

Is it a shielded RCA cable? If not, they can pick up interference from other cables, usually speaker wires. I use a shielded RCA cable with my smartphone and tablets into my receiver with no problems.

1/8" is just not a good connection for sound quality. The Sonos connect would probably be your best option if you're willing to pay a bit for it.

are you by chance using the phono inputs?

CD input. The sound through the speakers is very quiet and very poor quality

I just got about 10 sonos speakers including some weatherproof "rock" ones out on the deck. They sound really really good

Swap each part out one at a time.
Using the same cord, plug it into another phone / player *of a different model*. Same sound? See if the original cord / iPhone combo does the same thing on a friend's stereo. Still bad? Last thing: try another patch cord.
Wild guess: the patch cord is not seated all the way into your phone, perhaps due to a case.

Wadia iPod dock.
LINK
This device bypasses the Apple iPod Internal DAC and sends the stream to the DAC in your receiver via the digital input.

I have used Airplay to play music on my phone or ipad via the Apple TV that is connected to my receiver.
It sounds good and lets me carry the phone around to drive when I want to change albums or playlists.

I'd get a new RCA cable and try that. It may be your cable.
I have about 800 CDs and I play them when listening to an album. I loaded every one of them onto iTunes on my PC at 320kbs. With this rate, you really cannot "hear" the loss when you load the album onto your iPhone by syncing, and then playing it through your car port (or whatever). Remember that .mp3 and .acc files are much more compressed than .wav files, and the kbs rate matters when it comes to sound quality.
I can use the Home Sharing feature to share the iTunes library to my phone, as long as they are on the same router. Then I can plug it into my RCA jacks and play through my stereo.
I recently purchased an Apple TV 3 and now I just use the "airplay" feature to play anything on iTunes to the Apple TV. I use the optical output, with a DAC and plug it right into the RCA jacks of my "old" stereo. Works like a charm.

What's the model number of your Onkyo and is it on your network ?

It's not getting a good signal but the cable type (stereo 1/8" to dual RCA) is not the problem. Make sure the source (iPhone) volume is cranked up and the amp (receiver volume) is not turned up too high. If you are having to turn the amp all the way up to compensate then there's a problem.
Make sure the headphone volume on your iPhone is turned up and not just the speaker volume if it has separate volume controls (My Android has separate level controls). Make sure the jacks are inserted all the way. Make sure the cable is good. Does it crackle it pop or hear static when you move the cable? If so there's a loose connection inside.
Something else to consider is a ground loop which happens when two devices are connected together but are plugged into separate outlets and thus different ground plugs which causes humming.

Bump to answer this and revisit the issue.
Onkyo TX-SR605. I was stumped. Been years since I researched these for the receiver purchase.
I believe I may have my answer to my issue but would still like a wireless option.
My issue before I believe was the phone. iPhone 4s was previous phone. Now with the 6s it is not an issue. Volume and clarity with the same cable is sufficient. With the old phone it was fuzzy and quiet. Our old iPad is the same story. But issues are fixed with the new phone? Guess it's pushing a better signal. I am using the standard headphone output to RCA Jack. I am using the input for a CD player, if that matters.
