I got a boo boo on a fingertip of my left hand. I am not a guitarist but do own a guitar. It made me wonder for any of you on here that are good or do earn a living by playing. Do you take extra caution with hands? How furious with yourself are you when you do something stupid and wound a hand or finger?

I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imaginations, but I am in an active cover band. I don't really think about it, but I'd imagine id be pretty pissed if I did something stupid and hurt my hands. A year or so ago I had carpel tunnel syndrome and couldn't play for a couple of months. It was terrible.

I did (do) it as a profession.

I rarely wound a hand or finger. I'm going to jinx myself by typing this. But it rarely happens.

With that said, I do take extra caution from time to time. I don't wash my hands very often as I don't want them to get too dry. I do put on lotion every night before bed. I use a knife very slowly when cutting vegetables or meat for a meal.

Other than that, I'm not really a handy man so I don't have to worry about hammering nails. I don't do car repair.

Oh I also make sure to not let my dog's leash get wrapped around any fingers, but everyone should do that.

I have always wondered this myself. I am no pro by any stretch, but i injured my hand at work a while back, had cuts on the outside of my index, ring, and middle fingers and really couldn't bend them at all. Didn't play guitar for about a week. Always wondered how a professional guitarist would handle that. Just get doped up and play through it I guess.

Sliced the f*ck outta my left index a few years ago. Sliced a nerve. I told the doc I played and he joked....you must not be that good or you would've been more careful.......he was dead on....bastard.

It could be a positive. I've heard Lowell George started playing slide primarily after he sliced his hand unloading for a gig and was forced to play slide the whole show.

I once had carpal tunnel syndrome and I couldn't-- well, never mind what I couldn't do

I had a neighbor once that was a world renowned cellist ( I hope that is the correct term for a person that plays cello), his hobby was woodworking, as in using table saws and other potentially hazardous to your fingers power tools. I asked him about the wisdom of doing this, and he said it was his form of living on the edge.

To this day I won't go near a power saw. I know way too many carpenters who are missing pieces of fingers,

I got my hand stuck in a tomatoe slicer and had to have 13 stitches in my right thumb. I had to relearn how to hold a pick and play without if for about 5 months. Still don't really have all the feeling back and that was 21 years ago.

I have had "tennis elbow " and found playing guitar virtually impossible as the action of play notes/chords makes he nerves flair up. Had to put the guitar away for 4 months. Stretching exerciseis the only thing that worked beside a cortisone shot.

Great photo of Tony's prosthetics.

Can you tell us the approximate year of this photo? These prosthetics look like his "home made" set.

I think he's got some professionally made pieces now.

I'm learning to play more fingerstyle stuff so I'm growing the fingernails out on my right (picking) hand. My right index finger is a pain because every time it starts to grow out I chip the nail and have to file it back. I have trouble with the thumb sometimes too. I've heard some people will paint their nails with superglue to strengthen them. I haven't gotten that desperate yet but I could see it happening.

Good luck with that. It's typically a lifelong, high maintenance operation. Players like Tommy Emmanuel and Steve Howe don't do it; they use flesh, though I expect their picking fingers are decently callused. Tommy does use a thumb pick.

If you want to get ridiculous, see James Taylor on Youtube discussing his nails regimen.

Haha...that was interesting.

I tried using a thumb pick when I took up the steel guitar a while back and didn't like it. I like to be able to feel the strings. They make finger picks that have holes in them so that your fingers actually touch the strings through the holes. That may end up being a partial solution but no such thing is available for the thumb as far as I know.

Ive been playing 20+ years have never seriously injured my fret hand until 2 weeks ago .

I was slicing vegetables to make shrimp & grits and hacked the tip of my ring finger off (my most important finger of all 10). I immediately thought of not being able to play guitar when it happened. I was able to still play somewhat, (basically no lead stuff or chord phrasing) and it actually helped me focus on right hand metal rhythm stuff and I wrote a ton of power chord metal riffs over the last few wks. I used my pinkie to compensate for power chords. Finally was able to play a little lead a few days ago and really bending up into a very aggresive vibrato is the only thing that still hurts. I will certainly be more cautious now. I became complacent being as that I cook so often.

You may be thinking of Alaska Piks, but they do work on the thumb. You actually do need a short nail to make them secure. I never could get used to them. An ordinary thumbpick, however, came fairly easily.

I think that photo was during their 2013 tour.

I'm reading his book. He said at first he made his own "thimbles" but now he has them made for him. I think he said he only has three pairs at a time: The set he uses, a backup pair that he keeps on him at all times, and a back up set that his tech keeps on him at all times. He literally never goes anywhere without them.
