I'm disqualifying GFR because they started as a trio, but were a 4-piece during their heyday

Not sure what you qualify as their "Heyday". They were a 3 piece band for their first three records, which are clearly their best.

Redding was difficult to deal with. Jimi could play bass almost as well as he could, and he was one of the best bass players in the world at the time.

JHE trivia, Noel Redding had never played bass in a group until the JHE, he had been strictly a guitar player. He contacted John Entwistle after he auditioned for the JHE to ask him what type of bass and amp he should get for playing with Hendrix lending credence to the theory he may have never played bass at all before joining JHE.

I believe this is true. Jimi was a perfectionist, though, and drove Redding to be great. Hell, they weren't on speaking terms when the Watchtower cover was recorded. Redding skipped the sessions. Dave Mason started out on acoustic 12-string guitar. Jimi didn't think it was up to snuff. Mason was moved down to bass. Not good enough. Finally, Mason was moved to the recording booth as engineer and uncredited producer. So, everything you hear on that record, except the drums, is Jimi.

Good times...

Yea. If you're talking new trios the JM Trio is easily in.

Steve Jordan, Pino Palladino, JM
