Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind

Self-titled, Blue, and Out of The Vein are lyrical masterpieces.

I’ll die on that hill.

So many particularly in the South will pooh pooh Springsteen, but he is a helluva songwriter with pretty deep prose....his musical arrangements are not bad either

Jagger-Richards partnership has not been mentioned but in the late 60s and early to mid 70s, they pumped out some great lyrics and music

Others.....aside from Plant( who was excellent)

Townes Van Zandt
Steve Earle
Paul McCartney
Gordon Lightfoot

Charles Wesley Godwin is an up and comer. His work is impressive

In the same vein.....Brennan Edwards

Good Man from OOTV. Simple lyrics don't do it justice though, it's the alliteration in how he sings that just adds that extra bit of zest to the song.

If you ever find a way to forgive me
If you ever find a way to put this all to rest
Because I'm hanging on your dress now like a little boy

When all that you wanted, all that you wanted
Was a good man, all right
Right in the middle of another big fight
Boom back, another one tonight
Blood never forgets but who protects
The memories when we bleed each other from the vein?

And if you ever find a way to make this interesting
If I ever find a way to stop disintegrating
Into pieces that I was that you destroy

When all that you wanted, all that you wanted
Was a good man, all right
Right in the middle of another big fight
Go to bed it's getting light out
Why do you, why do you, why do you
Always find me in the places when I'm coming down?

And how do you do it when I'm overwhelmed by a violet sky?
And we fly in a decayed orbit 66,000 miles an hour goes by
When we kissed and only now do I feel your mouth
Like an ache you never knew
And it was right in front of you
Oh how do you do it? Roots in the soil untangled
Releasing in sweet summer oil, still I recoil like mace
In all the little moments I pushed you away that I can't erase
Every moment overflows with power, 66,000 miles an hour

And if you ever find a way to forgive me
If you ever find a way to put this all to rest
Because I am hanging on your dress now like a little boy

When all that you wanted, all that you wanted
Was a good man, all right
And all that you wanted, all that you wanted
Was a good man

Favorite - John Prine
Greatest - Townes Van Zandt
Great but neither of the above - Dylan

Others that are very good to brilliant at times - Guy Clark, Kristofferson, Steve Goodman, Iris Dement (short run), Jay Farrar, Springsteen, Neil Young (some crap too), Warren Zevon...

only to say he deserves life in front of the firing squad for "candle in the wind"

And co-wrote We Built this City which is dreadful.

I grew up a huge Elton John fan and still like his music. But Bernie Taupin is a mediocre writer, at best.

Can anyone explain these mystifying lyrics from Country Comfort (a song I really like anyway):

"Soon the pines will be falling everywhere, village children fight each other for a share".

I don't think Bernie Taupin had a clue what he was doing when he wrote that.

I've noticed this board is negative on Springsteen, but he's exceptional with lyrics.

The thing I appreciate most about Springsteen's lyric is the attention to detail. He is so particular with his choice of words. He uses words like a painter uses paintbrushes.

Here is an example of what I mean from Jungleland.

Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain

He easily could have just written "girl sitting on a car drinking beer in the rain." Instead he lets us know it's not a girl, it is a barefoot girl. It is not a car it is a Dodge. It's not beer, it is warm beer. It is not rain, it is a soft summer rain. You find that kind of stuff all through his best work. It is not a generic scene he is putting you in. It is a highly detailed and very specific scene he is describing.

I love Jungleland and you're right. Atlantic City is one of my favorite lyrical songs, and it nails the nuance of being young, poor and taking a desperate way out.

Look, I'll go to bat for Born in the USA having a tremendous amount of lyrical detail and depth for a pop song.

"Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go"

That's significantly above average for what he pretty explicitly did as a pop album. It's great imagery of a Nam vet down on his luck.

On most instances Bernie Taupin handed Reginald Kenneth Dwight some shite lyrics that Reggie made sound good.

Rotten peaches, rotting in the sun

Seems I've seen that devil fruit since the world begun

Mercy, I'm a criminal, Jesus, I'm the one

Rotten peaches, rotting in the sun

What the frick

Hard to believe no one has mentioned Van the Man!

We were born before the wind
Also, younger than the sun
'Ere the bonnie boat was won
As we sailed into the mystic
Hark now, hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly
Into the mystic
Yeah, when that fog horn blows
I will be coming home
Yeah, when that fog horn blows
I wanna hear it
I don't have to fear it
And I wanna rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float
Into the mystic
When that fog horn blows
You know I will be coming home
Yeah, when that fog horn whistle blows
I gotta hear it
I don't have to fear it
And I wanna rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float
Into the mystic
Come on, girl
Too late to stop now

Layne Staley

So much blood I’m starting to drown
It runs from cold to colder
Time to time the skies come down
They help me lose my way

Tears and lies for answers
You and open veins, God knows I’m gone
Girl I just want you to
Come on down

Lord it’s a storm and I’m heading to fall
These sins are mine and I’ve done wrong, oh babe
Come on down

Come on down, my babe, wrong time I know
Long gone day
Mmm-hm-hmm-hmmm hmm-mm-hm
Who ever said we wash away with the rain?

See you all from time to time
Isn’t it so strange
How far away we all are now
Am I the only one who remembers that summer?
Oh-oh-ooh-oh-oh, I remember
Everyday each time a place was saved
The music that we made
The wind has carried all of that away

Long gone day
Mmm-hm-hmm-hmmm hmm-mm-hm
Who ever said we wash away with the rain?

So many tears I’m startin to drown
The rains in heaven must all come down
Silver spoons affix the crown
The luckless ones are broken

Fears and lies for answers
You and open flames
God knows I’m gone
And I just want you to
Come on down, mmm-hmmm

Lord it’s a storm and I’m heading to fall
These sins are mine and I’ve done wrong
I want you to
Oh, I just want you to
Come on down

I fear again like then I lost my way, mmm-hm
And shout to God to bring my sunny day, yeah
