Considering ability, you have to put John Mayer and SRV in a class by themselves. Problem with Mayer is his pop stuff and being a giant douche.

I love em all....wish I had been able to see Albert and Freddie though.

Found this entire concert of Albert...dude could command a stage...even playing with a bad finger!

And one that isn't talked about much but is truly one of the greats...Luther Allison. Luckily got to see him play in Baton Rouge in early 90's and interview him...great guy. Here is an entire show on youtube.

Meh - you have a lot of incredibly skilled guys that never got the attention of the top tier - I already mentioned Buchanan who was incredible. Another white boy, Michael Bloomfield was amazing. Derek Trucks is another example. Heck, Elmore is a top tier guy who could have played anything, and is probably the best slide guy next to Skydog.

Would you mean to say Peter Green, by any chance?

Underrated (and a white boy): Roy Buchanan
From a few months ago:

My 3 favorites:
Roy Buchanan
Ritchie Blackmore
Rory Gallagher

Runner-ups:

Nils Lofgren
Johnny Winter
Tommy Bolin

Each of them has, or had since 3 of them are dead, unique styles and sounds that are instantly identifiable.
All of them except Nils Lofgren are, or were, exceptional blues players.

This man speaks the truth.

But with that said, I am partial to Stevie Ray Vaughan - Little Wing

Poodlebrain - what about Bloomfield? He obviously had demons (as many did/do) - but his story is so intriguing - a skinny, rich Jewish kid and he and the blues just sort of found each other - I guess if that's going to happen, it had to happen in Chicago.

I think Johnny Winter is freaking fantastic player too

I think I still have hearing problems from listening to "Johnny Winter And...Live" too loud.

I've been listening to Luther Allison lately. Too bad I discovered him after his death. St. Landry Parish's own Lonnie Brooks is another great blues guitarist.

Most folks don't know that Fleetwood Mac was an awesome blues-based rock band before they became the pop powerhouse.

I also like Henry Vestine from Canned Heat.

As a blues style guitarist I like Mark Knopfler as well as or better than Clapton.

To each his own I guess.

As far as flat out playing the blues genre using the guitar as an instrument when considering overall technical ability, precision, soul, passion, heart and tone it's Stevie Ray Vaughan and it's really not even close. It's obvious. Name a style and he can smoke anyone at it. The next closest guy to him is Gary Moore. Then there is everyone else by a very wide margin.

Edit: have to put Bonamassa in the same category as Moore/SRV as well. He is a phenomenal player and just may have the best Les Paul tone of all time.

I have issues with all of these greatest whatever type threads. All anyone can do is list their favorites as the responses are always subjective. I could list hundreds of guitarists who I enjoy listening to play blues. Which one is the best I could not say. Which ones I prefer to listen to is much easier.

Bloomfield was devoted to the blues which separates him from guitarists who were rock 'n rollers who played the blues. He was an inspired player who would be on my list of greats, but then so would other white guys like Peter Green and Gary Moore.

Has Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins name been dropped yet, because his brand of blues is as good as it gets in my book.

Don't think he's gonna smoke anyone now, as far as a rock-blues guitarist yea he is top notch. As for the "any style" comment, get real, Buckethead would shred him at shredder style guitar.
