there was a lot of very subpar Garcia in the 90s where he was basically nodding off, mumbling (or outright forgetting) lyrics, and missing crucial points of songs

Who cares? He's still tGOAT

Any Dead show after about '91 probably sucked arse. Hornsby is a virtuoso but Welnick was just terrible with that Casio keyboard sound...and together the music was just off compared to Brent. Garcia was clearly done.

Brent's death (RIP) really took a toll on Jerry

That being said: I'm under no illusion that people can't have great, spiritual, peak experiences with any number of great post-Dead lineups.

Good post. There is a whole generation of fans (myself included) that won't ever get to go to an actual Grateful Dead show with Jerry Garcia playing. There is no reason that those people shouldn't go to see Dead & Co. or whoever and have a ball.

I've seen Dead & Co. twice. Both times were awesome, no matter how they compare to the actual Grateful Dead.

JRAD is even better.

JRAD is the best thing to happen to Grateful Dead's music since the death of Jerr. John Mayer is the worst.

Update on my weekend.

So i started my weekend with Capt. Panics list at about 6pm Friday. I smoked a brisket and my mind for 15 hours straight. listned to 6 live concerts this weekend. My wife has been out of town for 6 days so i have had the house to myself and listening to the Dead and smoking a brisket seemed liked the thing to do. I have watched the documentary on amazon and it was great. my buddy who started me on the Dead with my first JRAD show 3 years ago also lent me a book on Jerry on sunday..

what a great weekend. and for this newbie its the cornell show in 77 followed by the filmore east late set from 70.

that's been my favorite shows so far.

This. Theres nothing original about what mayers doing, hes just copying jerrys licks.

Ive seen many post jerry "dead" shows and ive always had a good time regardless of the music.

The whole dead and co thing is a huge catch 22 for me, its awesome that younger fans are getting a chance to feel the vibes and enjoy the environment, its just sad that a douche nozzle like john mayer is in the band and people say its better than when jerry was around.

John mayer never even listened to the dead until a few years ago. Chris robinson was 100% right when he was on howard stern a few months ago.

except that nobody says that

if you are referring to my comment about the 90's shows i saw, well then we will have to agree to disagree. the 93/94 shows i went to were objectively bad. no i didnt go to them all, and surely there were some gems. none of them (zero) compare to the band's peak

what i said was that the post dead shows i've seen were all better played that those i saw in 93/94, and that has got nothing to do with mayer

You said this:

quote:

every post dead show I've seen (furthur, Phil, Bobby, dead & bro) has been better musically than any 90's dead show I saw.

I find it to be a ridiculously dumb statement.

The worst grateful dead shows still pawn all the spinoffs.

I mean dead and co play the songs at like half speed.

you would have to have seen/heard every bad dead show and every single post-dead show to make that statement. since i am commenting on shows i've actually attended, lets just leave this alone because, yes, its getting dumb

Ratdog with kimock and wasserman = pretty good, ratdog without either of those guys was pretty bad.

I know im in the minorty, but i like the tour they did with warren and joan osborne, the dead i think it was called.

I also really dug the campfire band.

The other ones and furthur were really meh to me.

Not sure the number (I think 8) is probably my all time favorite, 5/8/70. great acoustic set followed by an insane 2nd set and encore.

Been listening to this all week at work. Hell of a show. fricking love the acoustic first set. They get after it. Cold Jordan gospel song

The '98 Other Ones were pretty damn good when I saw 'em in Charlotte. There were a few moments where they almost (but not quite) fooled me into thinking I was listening to the Dead on a good night...
