Ratdog with kimock and wasserman = pretty good, ratdog without either of those guys was pretty bad.

The weir, jay lane and wasserman show I saw at waned was one of the most uninspired concerts I have ever been too. So disappointing. Everything else that weekend was unforgettable despite my best efforts.

This is the year I went. Stephen stills was way better than weir, stills was surpassingly awesome though.

I enjoyed almost all the Ratdog shows I'd seen. However, one time I saw them in Asheville in '01, and it almost destroyed my faith in the scene. Despite it being a good performance, I'd say at least 75% of the crowd was mingling in the hallways & concession areas, instead of actually watching the show. That 75% number is no exaggeration, and it was all night long, not just during the opening set numbers. Love Asheville in general, but that was the lamest crowd I'd ever seen...

The Lockn' scene this year is embarrassing, it's like 80% Dead ripoffs/spinoffs/tributes. I get that Bobby, Phil and Billy want to cash in on the Fare Thee Well momentum, but at some point it becomes a bit too much. Phil Lesh & moe.? How boring can you get?

At this point, seeing any of the former members' acts is for nostalgia purposes only, and to say that you got to see them live. If I want fresh, enjoyable takes on Dead music, I will stick to JRAD.

The Phil and Friends with Warren and Jimmy is my favorite. going on memory, but I think it was 2000-2002? Warren really kills it on the Brent songs.

Will check it out. Downloaded a few albums off Spotify of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. Some really good stuff. Very grassy.

I also love listening to the old Hart Valley Drifters album a good bit. Sitting on Top of the World and Nine Pound Hammer are two of my favorite songs. Love hearing young Jerry sing bluegrass style.

... the entire 22 date tour of E72 was simply amazing.
Sadly, it's pretty much the last we got to hear of Pigpen's raspy vocals and blues harmonica

When I saw the Black Crowes open for the Dead (their one and only time), I thought for sure either Jerry would come out to play "Hard to Handle" with the Crowes, or possibly the Dead bust it out with maybe Chris & Rich joining the band onstage. Seemed like a great idea, but maybe Jerry couldn't be bothered to re-learn it at that stage of his career...

The most amazing thing to me about the grateful dead is how many bands there are within the band, even with the same personnel. For example, im listening to 4-18-70 (bobby is tripping balls, lol) right now, an acoustic show. Completely different band than what they were doing just a few months earlier in late '69 and long stretched psychedelic jams.

It really is. I kind of like the late 70's stuff where they would basically split the show, with the first set being Jerry ballads and some of their country-inspired stuff, and the second set being nice and stretched out jams. They kept to that same format, but IMO Brent brought a completely new dynamic to the band and I absolutely love Brent-era Dead.
