Grateful Dead - Ripple

I was never a Dead fan. I never really got it at all. I think American Beauty is a fine album, but still never listened to it very much over the years.
Anyway, I was at a friend's funeral recently and his children played Ripple at the end of the service and asked everyone to join in singing. I'm not going to lie - it gave me goosebumps. The melody and lyrics of the song are truly exceptional.
I did some digging around online, and was surprised to find that they dropped Ripple from their live repertoire very early on and played it only sporadically over time:

Here's a youtube of that final performance - it now makes sense why the crowd is going so apeshit throughout...they've been starved for this electric performance for nearly 20 years!

And for fun, here's a bunch of theorizing about the lyrics' meaning:

Following an initial period of not too frequent performances in 1970 and 1971, “Ripple” disappeared from shows until the shows in 1980 commencing at the Warfield on September 25, and continuing for a run of 25 shows, during which it was played every show at the conclusion of the first (acoustic) set. After that, it was only played twice more in performance by the Dead, with the final “Ripple” played at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, on September 3, 1988. “Ripple” closed the show, and was played electric for the first time since 1971. An interesting performance history, no?

It was very sad, because he died way too young of something entirely random, but the service was absolutely a celebration of life. They could not have picked a better tune to play him off. I was honored to be included.

My favorite dead tune to pick on the front porch on a sunny day.

Terrapin station will be played at my funeral.
Box of rain is funeral material as well, hunter wrote it for phil while his dad was dying.

didn't realize they wrote Ripple and Brokedown Palace the same day. Both are great tunes.

I guess it's the Dead reunion that has everyone on a Dead kick lately, as my wife has been listening non stop lately.
Another great freaking song in that vein (though more story based): "Wharf Rat."
There are live versions that give chills.

+1 on Terrapin Station.
I am pretty sure Phil wrote a large portion of Box of Rain while driving home from visiting his dying dad.
Box of Rain and Ripple are a staple of American Beauty. That album had so much raw emotion behind it, with Phil's father dying, Jerry's mother being tragically killed in a car accident, and months prior to these events were the death of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin (who was pretty close with the band, especially Pigpen). The album will always be a top 5 album for me.

Phil came up with melody in the car and hunter said the words just poured out of him.
Robert hunter doesnt get nearly enough credit for the deads success and his amazing wordsmanship.

He does by anyone who knows more than Casey Jones and Touch of Grey.
Anyone who is a fan of the band knows. shite I have a book of Hunter's songs called "box of rain"

Gotcha. I read "Searching for the Sound" a couple of months ago and couldn't remember exactly.
Absolutely. I've always thought of him as a member of the Dead.
