Not a big Eagles fan, but they don't bother me like they do some people...

Tough 2016 for music lovers... RIP Mr. Frey..

They were truly good. I saw them in 1974 and again last July, 2015 in Bossier at what was their final concert on the tour. Frey and Henley were good together. I did not appreciate the way Frey treated a fan in front of everyone at the Bossier show. When you are paying that kind of money to see a show, there is just no excuse, and it put a damper on things for a lot of fans. Many talked about that long after the show. However, that said, there is no denying that the music was damned good. Henley had already indicated that the tour would probably be their last, and that the Bossier show was essentially their "victory lap" at the end of the tour. Another era ends. They were indeed a talented band.

Not sure what that refers to but Frey was a known arse. It came across loud and clear on the special done on Eagles. To me Henley was the band but there is no doubting Glenn's talent. RIP

One of many accounts of his dickishness and douchbaggery.

But goddamn I loved the music he made to no end. And when it's all said and done that's all that really matters.

I respected Bowie and his influence on many of the artist I love. But the Eagles have comforted my soul for as long as I can remember.

The snobs that sneer at the Eagles bother me not a bit, but how anyone can discount a band who can write something as beautiful and moving as 'The Last Resort' does puzzle me. It's their loss in missing some of the best music ever made in America. Honestly, I think a lot of it is a reaction to their popularity. Some people just can't believe anything that that many people like can have any real artistic value.

It's not a competition. Though, it does speak to the tastes of the board that Glen Frey gets a sticky and Bowie doesn't. To be honest, the Eagles mean next to nothing to me, while Bowie's death hit me particularly hard for a celebrity death.

But that's just a personal thing. Again, it's not a competition of who gets the most post-mortem tributes. There's nothing wrong with it, but this board's tastes skew much closer to the Eagles than to Bowie.
I'm not even that big a Bowie fan. I simply was legit surprised, as David Bowie was a far bigger celeb, even in the US.

It just occurred to me that Bowie and The Eagles were quite similar in one respect: Bowie smoothed out Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground, making that style/scene palatable to a mass audience, while The Eagles took the country-rock of Gram Parsons and polished it up for both AM and album-oriented radio (I once saw an interview with one of them where he said their goal starting out was to "avoid the mistakes The Byrds made").

As far back as my memories go, the Eagles are there. I can remember being a small boy of four or five in the mid-70s, standing up in the back of our Plymouth singing along to Eagles songs on the AM radio.

I don't mean to denigrate Bowie by any means. It's just that he was not the soundtrack to life in small town Louisiana in the 1970s. The Eagles though, were very much so. So while I have come to respect Bowie very deeply and am to this day finding more of his work that fascinates me, he can never mean as much to me as the Eagles.

It's funny about the snobs. When I take the time to listen to some of the bands they like, I tend to think those bands suck arse. To each his own I guess. But if you don't like the Eagles, I don't trust you and probably don't want to know you.

Where's Paul Harvey when you need him for the rest of the story???? What did the fan do, What did Glenn do to the fan in Bossier city? Just like a Toosie Pop the world may never get to the center of this and know?

I wonder if this is it for the band? I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect it is.

People on here have mentioned replacements like Jackson Browne or JD Souther. I could see it for one or two specialty events, but no more tours.

I tend to agree with this. Jackson Browne plays a similar style of music - and famously gave Frey co-writing credit for adding, essentially, a single line to "Take it Easy" - and this became a breakthrough hit for The Eagles - but he is a way, way different cat from the average Eagle. Browne or Souther would be the only guys with enough of a connection for this to work in sincere way.

I would like to see them do a limited number of engagements, if nothing else to truly sign off - maybe dedicate it to Glenn and give some money to charity devoted to RA/chronic inflammatory/colitis groups.

And, I would consider it an incomplete effort if they didn't try to include Meisner and, yes, Mr. Felder.

The rescheduled Kennedy Honors may be the last, last, last hurrah for anything resembling The Eagles - if Henley and Felder can kiss and make up for that, I would have just the slightest bit of hope for some positive final chapter for this most L.A. of L.A. bands.

ETA: Remember when every, single Eagle played at the Rock HOF induction?

Exactly what I was thinking. Do a farewell thing, kind of like the Dead.

I know you know the history of this stuff really well. My takeaway just from the "History" DVD was that Meisner was just a bit of a quirky guy and the spotlight was getting to him a little bit. As for Felder, there is no question that it had to be difficult to work for egomaniacs like Henley and Frey (see David Geffen's comments about Henley in the documentary). That said, at some point you have to know your role, shut your mouth, and enjoy your paychecks (even if they are not as big as you think they should be).
