Yes, it was both the real name of a real ship and the ship was named after a real person.

Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company of Milwaukee, WI, actually commissioned the ship as part of their investment in the mineral industry.

When commissioned, the ship was named after the CEO and Chairman of the Board at the time - Edmund Fitzgerald.
