Had heard of them and heard a song or two but never really investigated their tunes, How did I miss this glorious band?

Awesome band. I've actually been listening to them a bunch this week because I saw Built to Spill cover How Soon Is Now? live Sunday

I bet that was pretty awesome. I saw them cover Don't Fear the Reaper when they were in Nashville a couple of weeks ago.

If you haven't yet, listen to the first half of Louder Than Bombs.

they've become popular again with the hipster crowd over the last 10-15 years, i was fortunate my mom always played that kind of music in the house growing up.

the hits is a great album if you're just getting into them

I don't think they've ever lost their popularity...

How could you stay with a fat girl who'll say

Oh, would you like to marry me?
And if you like you can buy the ring
She doesn't care about anything

Would you like to marry me?
And if you like you can buy the ring
I don't dream about anyone....except myself.

The Smiths were a band that can be classified as "generational." Like the OP, it doesn't matter if you just get familiar with them in 2015, their sound and lyrics are unique and transcend decades.

I was fortunate to see them live in NO in the mid 80s. New wave/punk is the last great genre, imho.

You might like the Psychedelic Furs. Same era. They actually played in BR at that corner bar near southdowns back in the day. I forget the name.

This.

I first listened to The Smiths on a school bus trip back in 1986. I couldn't believe what I was listening to - it was mesmerizing. It holds up to this day and I recommend anyone that hasn't heard to listen to the first three albums in full. Morrissey and Marr were great together.

Morrissey has the voice of an angel. And johnny marr's sound created such an amazing feel to their music. And obviously the song writing was just pure excellence. Its been said ad nauseum but im a huge fan of oscar wilde and you can hear him in so many ways in morriseys dry sardonic wit. They were truly a "lightning in a bottle" type band

Please, please, please is one of those incredibly simple yet most evocative and moving songs ever. kinda like harvest moon

"And when you're dancing and laughing and finally living,

Hear my voice in your head and think of kindly."

Are they back together? I thought Johnny Marr was ill or died?

Love them. Transcends homophobia. I can openly sing a gay mans lyrics. And DGAF.

Amazing how talented Johnny Marr was on guitar at that age. Morrissey wrote some great lyrics.

IIRC, he's been playing with some other bands, including Modest Mouse.
