nope
I had never heard any version until fairly recently, so its generation-defining qualities are lost on me.

As a song it's meh.

And anyway John Cale does the best cover of "Hallelujah"

I love me some Johnny Cash, but I like the original version of Hurt better than his. It fits in with the feel of the album it's on (The Downward Spiral) just perfectly.

I also like the original Soundgarden version of Rusty Cage better than his.

Neither of his cover versions are bad really, it's just that the originals were out of sight to begin with.

I do like his version of Southern Accents better than the original.

Rufus Wainwright does a spot on version of "Across The Universe".

Fear Factory's 'Cars' does Gary Numan proud.

Type O Negative's 'Summer Breeze' turns the Seals % Croft original into a completely different tune, in the best way possible.

And I have to mention the Foo Fighter's 'Darling Nikki'. Love that one too.

Opinions vary. I really like Buckley's version on Graceland, but, particularly his alternate take for the video is THE best cover of Hallelujah, and perhaps the best cover by anyone, ever, of any song (and I like Cale's cover, too):

Best Cover of a Song, ever, ever

Solomon Burke took a really good Van Morrison song, Fast Train, and knocked it out of the park. The Wire fans may remember this season ending retrospective.
Fast Train.

Janes Addiction - Sympathy for The Devil

Not saying it's better than the original but I really like their version and their cover of Ripple.

I don't know if that is "better" than Sting's, but it is truly beautiful!

CCR's cover of Suzie Q (along with most versions) are way better than the original by Dale Hawkins.

Although it's probably not his fault since he recorded it in like 1950
