Roger Waters was never better lyrically than he was on " The Final Cut ".

Change my mind.

Snoozer of an album, IMO. The only track I like just so happens to be the only one with Gilmour on vocals.

Music "art" if you will is subjective and no one can really say what the best is, but I have to say they really seems to mail it in on the Final Cut album. To me it seemed like a trial run for Waters solo album Pro's and Con's of Hitchhiking which was released the following year and IMO an better album. But again what's good and not good is a matter of opinion.

It's possible, but it doesn't mean anything to me if the music sucks. It's a low point for Waters...maybe his lowest. I enjoy just about everything else he's done.

After the great run of Dark side, wish you were here, animals and the wall...the final cut's music was a HUGE letdown. Lyrics about Maggie,Brezhnev, tyrants and kings ect were a prelude to the end of Floyd. The Wall should have been the end of Rog crying about his dead daddy. They went from "the shite" to shite IMHO. Once Wright and Gilmour took a backseat to Rog, the magic was gone.

Lyrically, it was very strong, but stronger than Animals? WYWH? I think it was the logical evolution from the delayed teen angst displayed on The Wall - which was also very powerful, lyrically - The Wall was classic Waters' excess but also had Mother, Young Lust, Run Like Hell, ABITW Part 2 and, of course, Comfortably Numb (which is a GOAT candidate).

The problem with The Final Cut was that it was supposed to be a solo Waters album and the music wasn't up to Floyd standards (meaning took a back seat to the lyrics), The Gunner's Dream and Not Now John, notwithstanding.

Recall Roger fired Rick for the Wall, had to hire him back to be a touring musician and he wasn't a member of the band again until David brought him back after Roger left.

Pink Floyd was at their best when Roger collaborated with David and Rick was free to be the soul of the band. Rick, of course, had his own demons in the late 70s that complicated things greatly.

Rick was going through a divorce during the recording of The Wall. He was not contributing much to the band, understandably so. However he still wanted an equal cut of production royalties. This pissed Roger off, and was a big reason why he was fired.

While The Wall is magnificent, I agree Pink Floyd was their best when they all worked together.

Is this only for hard core fans? I tune in when I see one of the songs come up on XM, but haven't been able to get into any of them. "I don't hear a hit"

I think it's an odd question considering the credits for many of the lyrics were shared with Floyd. "Breathe" on DSM for example, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright are credited for the lyrics.

They were certainly influenced, and perhaps haunted, by Syd's rise and subsequent check out. But, I couldn't say Waters was better or worse on a time line. I do think DSM was their pinnacle. I think some would say WYWH was that, but those two are a toss up with me.

If you're looking for radio pop music, then no this is not the record for you. 'Animals' is the songs that didn't make in on Wish You Were Here that were put onto their own record. WYWH is mostly sonic exploration, but they did put a couple of pop hits on their for sales. Animals is strictly the sonic eploration that didn't quite fit on WYWH, so there are no pop songs to be had.

It is their best record IMO, and it requires you to simply start from beginning and listen to the end for the enjoyment of the journey.

Agree with all of this. Animals is my Pink Floyd album, but it doesn't have a hit. I do think it has the best Waters lyrics and David guitar work and that is saying a lot. I love Pigs and Dogs the most.

No.
I don't think any of their stuff can be called this. I messed up that quote too. Hit should have been single.

Don't care about lyrics- 'The Final Cut' was a boring album that offered nothing musically. It was the only RW Floyd album I never purchased...
