What band has put out the best album to bring them back from being irrelevant?

I wouldn't say these guys were irrelevant but the came back in a big way.

Dandy, why have your beloved Pixies not been able to record a new record? Are they past it?

There have been two new songs that I know of, Into the White and Bam Thwok! Good songs, not great.

Yeah, I believe they are past it.

Wise decision then... I'd hate for them to put out a crap record...

What? Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed, and Beggars banquet all kicked arse. I think it's a stretch but if there is a Stones 'comeback' album it's either Beggars (although the 'Juimin Jack Flash' single came out first - that's a comeback single that's not on Beggars) or Voodoo Lounge. Steel Wheels was ok but Voodoo was their best since Tattoo You IMO.

I think Aerosmith 'Permanant Vacation' is a damn good choice as was stated earlier.

i actually think that album brought them back after their second fallout.

with the metal community in tentative support of black album and the full on rejection of load and reload, i dont think the band survives to make st anger after they are the frontbearers of the napster controversy. the one thing that gave them some credence back with the fans was garage inc. every metal fan loved garage days, and hearing them come out with an entire new side was exactly what the band needed to get back in good graces with the fans. if not for garage inc, there is no way the fans stick around past 2001.

They were considered finished, done, over, dead, kaput, after Sticky Fingers. The Glimmer Twins were grizzled and prematurely grey, on the lam from the tax man, road weary, one was a roaring drug addict, they both had begun dabbling on projects alone, Mick Taylor wasn't fully integrated as a Stone (many would argue neither in the band as well), and members of the specialized press were all taking bets on when they would disband.

Does Back in Black by AC/DC count? They contemplated calling it quits after Bon Scott died and ended up recording one of the top 5 selling albums of all time.

This. It depends on some sources, but most places have it either ahead or behind of dark side of the moon and just inside top 5.
