Tim Alexander and Tre Cool are dead even IMO and Grohl is a beast.

Maybe its just because Im not a big Rush fan. To each his own.

Could be you're not too familiar with the catalog. Geddy Lee is about as good as it gets in the rock trio format - in terms of sheer chops and melodic inventiveness. NP's output speaks for itself.

Bigger crime was leaving out Stewart Copeland.

One of their more accessible instrumentals. Lee is probably Claypool's primary influence - although LC's style is more funky/finger tapping. Primus opened for Rush in the early 90's and covered the above song in their formable years.

My favorite Rush song is "Working man" and that's a different drummer.

I don't understand the limited criteria...

Because I don't see any Rolling Stones.

I don't care if you hate them, you couldn't buy their greatest hits without buying a Box-set back in the day.

I'm not a huge Stones fan - but Jesus, they are top 3. There has to be some objective criteria, everything can't be hipster subjective..."I really like this band that made one album in 1971, so they're in my top 3."

1. Gimme Shelter
2. (I Can't Get No Satisfaction)
3. Sympathy for the Devil
4. Street Fighting Man
5. You Can't Always Get What You Want
6. Paint It, Black
7. Jumpin' Jack Flash
8. Brown Sugar
9. Wild Horses
10. Under My Thumb
11. Honky Tonk Women
12. Get Off of My Cloud
13. Midnight Rambler
14. Let's Spend the Night Together
15. Miss You
16. Beast of Burden
19. Ruby Tuesday
20. Time Is on My Side
21. As Tears Go By
22. Start Me Up
23. Let It Bleed
24. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)
25. Lady Jane
26. Not Fade Away
27. Heart of Stone
28. Mother's Little Helper
29. Out of Time
30. It's All Over Now

That's just the top 30 - there is a Top 100.

I think the OP was asking who are the best bands comprised of only 3 members...could be wrong tho. While I'm with you regarding their place in rock history, the Stones aren't a 3 man band.
