I never knew much about this guy until recently when I read/heard some old interviews. Lennon and McCartney were both slagging him pretty bad.

It seems to me like the only member of the inner circle that didn't end up with at least some taint was Mal.

Rain is one of my favorite Beatle tracks (a fave of Ringo's too)

Is it a favorite of his or just the one he’s most proud of his drumming on?

Lake, I’ll post my solo list tomorrow.

Btw I did buy a book referenced in here, the All the Songs one. I’m enjoying it so far. I basically have it next to the couch and read through a few songs at a time every other day or so.

I'm not a huge George solo fan, but looks like Blow Away is missing.

Solid list, but gaping holes include I Know (I Know) and Out the Blue.

No opinion on Paul and Ringo.

Solid list and just amazing - like you said - how fertile anything surrounding them is!

I've read the first Brown, Tony Bramwell's memoir, the Mal Evans & am in the middle of Alistair Taylor's book.

Leaving aside Evans, these memoirs all have one thing in common: their authors barely mention other Epstein assistants.

You NEVER see phrases like "Alistair, Tony & I sat down to lunch". It's always the author alone w/Epstein: "I said to Brian" & helping him make crucial decisions.

I specifically recall Brown not mentioning Taylor except to express surprise that Allan Klein had fired him. Why this was such a shock is never made clear, as Brown had not mentioned him before, nor did he mention Taylor again.

I was in attending a meeting at church the night of the Beatles on Sullivan. Fortunately, I was able to split early and made it home in time for the performance. Mind blowing and life- changing. No group had ever written and performed like the Beatles. Four years later in 1968, I sat in the front row for Jimi Hendrix in Shreveport. Also mind blowing.

It likely should be on there, but I'm not a huge fan of that song. But it is one of his bigger hits and I do have some on that list that I feel like I "should" have on there even though I'm not a big fan of the song (i.e. Crackerbox Palace and Bangledesh).

I'll check those out. I've heard I Know before, but don't really remember it. Not sure I've heard Out of the Blue or not.

Outside of mostly their mainstream stuff, I never have been super interested in their solo work so I've never done a deep dive of their solo stuff. I much prefer their Beatles work as a whole.

They're both on Mind Games. While you're there, check out Aisumasen. Pretty incredible.

This is pretty much where I am. John's is the only solo career that I feel gets me actually excited. His best tunes are as good as Beatles tunes.

Out of those, I've only read the Mal one, but this is the sense I get too - they all want to be thought of us "the main guy".

I think I mentioned I recently listened to that 4 hour Rolling Stone interview of Lennon and Ono from 1970. Lennon lashed out at most people on that list - notably refraining from doing so for Mal. He even badmouthed Neil. To be fair, it was mid-H and he later went on to sort of pshaw a lot of the things he said as just drug-induced nonsense. But it's hard to think Mal didn't occupy a special position in their hearts.

I thought the most shocking thing in the Mal book was when he had the tiff with Paul and Paul said something like "remember, you are my servant and you are here to serve me". I always try not to put too much emphasis on individual moments, because it was such a crazy time, so many drugs and so many conflicting data points that I know it's a rich and complex tapestry. Still, that just feels out of all character for any of them.

John also came down pretty hard on Esptein and Martin. I totally get the perspective that the artist is obviously the vast majority of story. But particularly with Martin, who knows how far they would have gone? He was absolutely relevant. I also think Epstein was relevant too. It's almost bizarre how willing they were to listen to him.

and how quickly and irreversibly things unraveled after he was gone

Paul kept it together and going forward, for better or for worse, for another 2.5 years. Out of that, we got MMT, White, Abbey and Let It Be. I'll call it a victory.

Question: has anyone ever read the Pete Shotton book? I just bought it on Amazon - no Kindle available.
