Beatnik drug dealer in early '60s N.O. Later became an FBI informant and CIA asset. In 1966 he claimed he had witnessed a second gunman in Dealey Plaza; shortly afterward he died in an automobile accident.

No I'm kidding. It's Brian Epstein.

Why not?

In all reality they should do one on George Martin.

A reunion was definitely being discussed when John was murdered. What might have been…

George would have been 81 today.

Gone too soon. He was never the writer that L/M were, but when he hit, he hit. He wrote arguably the two most popular songs of their entire catalog (Here Comes The Sun and Something) and the latter is the greatest love song ever written. All Things Must Pass is a great album. My Sweet Lord is a favorite of mine.

He never got the credit that he deserved, from fans and his band mates. Happy birthday to the Quiet Beatle. RIP

I know I'm late to this thread, so apologies if some of the stuff I respond to has already been touched upon. But I never come to the Music Board.

Huge Beatles fan though, and wish I would've found this thread when it was new.

Listen to “This Boy” on the recording, then find a good live version and see how good the harmonies still are.

This comment about their vocals and harmonies reminded me of this. I randomly found this the other day and listened to it at work: Revolver, but only the vocals.

It's a bit awkward with literally zero music obviously, but I thought it was a cool listen. It always amazes me at just how short those albums were. Revolver is one of the most influential albums of all time, and it clocks in at almost exactly 35 minutes of music. That's crazy to me that one of the most important albums ever can basically be listened to during your lunch break.

the entire recorded output of the Beatles clocks in at just over ten hours. Ten hours of music released in just shy of ten years.

I wore a shirt to work yesterday that’s well over ten years old LOL

When my youngest daughter started school at LSU, we loaded my pickup and her car and drove 13.5 hours to Baton Rouge — me in the truck and my wife and daughter in the car. (As an aside, we also made several trips to Target once we moved her in to her dorm. In contrast, when I went LSU, I moved myself to and around Baton Rouge for five years in just my car.)

During the drive, I listened to every Beatles’ album and single in chronological order, excluding the compilation albums except for Love, and including the reissue versions that include demos and alternate tracks. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and not once did I think I was getting tired of listening to the same artist. It is a testament to how much good music they produced in such a short period of time and how much they evolved over that period.

I do that once a year or so. I have a jump drive of all my music in my car and in my Beatles folder I have folders of all of their songs (Beatles and solo stuff), but also have folders broken down by album and in order, including the singles. It's a cool journey to listen to their work from start to finish and hear them shift and create literally all kinds of different music.

Note: I don't have ALL of their solo music, just the songs that I actually like (which are not very many overall compared with their total output of solo stuff). Looking at it right now actually, and I only have 90 of their solo songs that I like (15 for George, 24 for John, 39 for Paul, and 12 for Ringo).

Weirdly for me, George is my least favorite. And he's a lot of peoples' choice as favorite. I just think he was pretty overrated as a songwriter. Sure, his absolute best could hang with top-tier Beatles songs, but as a whole he just paled in comparison to L/M. And that's not a knock on him as much as it is a tip of the cap to arguably the greatest songwriting duo in history (although I also think L/M's solo stuff also is much better than George's as a whole).

WMGGW is one of my favorite George songs, but in terms of greatness it is knocked down a few pegs since what makes it so awesome was Clapton's guitar playing. Had George played on it I would rank it much higher than I do. Clapton killed that solo though. But by all accounts that's the kind of person George was...he didn't care about limelight and accolades and cared more about his buddies and thought it would be cool if Clapton played on one of their songs.

You aren't alone in that. George just never has done it for me. Like I said, his best are great obviously, but outside of those few the rest pale in comparison for me.

I think George even alluded to it in an interview one time where he said John and Paul got started a good bit before he did, so they were able to get their "bad songs" out of the way while he was writing some not so great ones during Beatlemania.

But outside of a handful of songs, I don't really care for much of George's work at all.

once you get past "dark horse" (and even before), a listen through george's solo catalog is a difficult ask. banal repetitive lyrics, tired melodies and a general paint by numbers vibe

before then though, masterpieces

But the post I responded to was about his songwriting. I don’t think who played the guitar solo changes a single thing about the greatness of the song.

Sure, same here.

What it does do for me though is view it a bit differently when comparing George to L/M and holding it up to the standards of other songs (even his others). IMO it takes away from George a little that the best thing about the song (IMO) isn’t something he contributed really and was from someone outside the band.

I love Weeps and am not knocking the song itself.

Eh. Not for me.

I just have never been a huge fan of his contributions to the group or his solo stuff as a whole. Like I said, there are some songs of his that I do really like a lot. It’s just more that for me I prefer his counterparts for the most part when comparing.

There’s a handful of George songs that I absolutely love.

Ringo found some cassette tapes that he made in 1966. They are up for sale.
