Ya know, just because it's their most popular and well-known song doesn't make it bad.

You will never know. Whoever decides what song to release was spot-on though. Catchy enough for everybody to love, and good enough to reel people in.

I too do not think it is the best song, and when listening to the album I usually skip it. BUT, is that because 24 year old me heard it 6 billion times? Had they released Sullivan Street would we all be talking about how awesome Mr. Jones was?

My father (RIP), who was born in the late 1930s, LOVED Mr. Jones.

Just weird for this to have connected with someone roughly 55 years old at the time of release.

I guess I'm in the minority. I don't think this album has held up over the years at all. I loved it when it came out and wore that CD out, but I listened to it a few years ago for the first time in a long time and found it boring. There are a couple of good songs on it, but nothing earth shattering.

I like Recovering the Satellites better. More mature sound, IMO.

I actively dislike the song Mr. Jones and yet I still like the band -- and quite a bit really -- that counts it as the song they are most known for. Weird, wild stuff. 4. Anna Begins is the best song on the album 5. Omaha is a close second.

Fantastic live album:

They are tough to watch live at times. I have a couple of their live albums (not the one you list), and have seen them live in Houston 2-3 years ago. Its like Duritz makes a point to make it impossible for the crowd to sing along with him. He changes the tempo, emotion, and volume of the lines constantly. I've mentioned many times he breaks into a beatnik type spoken word stretches of lyrics and phrasing. All with the backing music being the same as recorded.

The recent show I saw in person was better, or maybe just being there (and drunk-ish) made it better.

They are still a favorite of mine and the OP Album is one of my personal top 5's
